Before the 'Abromovich era' which revolutionised football, you'd have to be pretty ignorant to deny that.

Fuck, Pompey got to the FA Cup final, they aren't top 4? Explain that?
Money has ruined the game, plenty of teams to blame for that but you cannot try to say that O'Neill fluked it.
OK, I was baiting Hammer with the 'shit club' vibe but to take Leicester to 3 finals in was it 4/5 years? Celtic to a European final against Mourinho etc.
Seriously, I like bold statements but unless you can back them up - FUCK OFF!

Pompey is the exception to the rule, football is far from an exact science so of course there will be the odd exception. Portsmouth were also beaten in the final when they came up against one of the big 4, full of megastars and megabucks that I previously stated. Plus the 'magic' of the FA cup should never be doubted, the league cup has no such magic
Celtic I've likened to Twente on far too many occasions and nobody has given me any sort of counter argument, so I assume thats being left at that. With regard to the UEFA final against Mourinho, this further highlights my point between the gulf in class between a good and great manager, a great manager being able to influence his team more from the bench, whilst O'Neill is stuck clueless with no plan B.
TBH this whole thread I feel like I've been backing myself up, and I'm sure not everything I've said you will all disagree with.

United fucked the premier league by becoming the biggest and richest most well managed club in the land. Then the Glazers bought them Then other clubs became wealthy and instantly they "bought the league..." Excuse me but what the fuck did the rag cunts do when they had monies....

I think the generation of Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Butt, The Nevilles etc was more to do with United's success in the Prem era.
Yes they occasionally splashed out big, but I think this was more to do with being very marketable in what was vastly becoming a more and more commercialised sport, rather than a billionaire chucking cash at a club.

You named players in a team when they had already won the Premiership?
So what does it matter who pays for the player, either way, they bought the success.

but if they hadn't come through the academy system, then united would've had to spend to remain competitive... meaning they'd have bought success in your/Rick Draper's eyes.

Cole was iirc the most expensive british player in the league at the time? Likewise Cantona, Sherringham, Solskjær and York were the front men. Beckham, Butt etc would have been fuckall without that person's to knock them in, look at them for England, totally fuckall.

Darren Fletcher is a key member of the squad, many even consider his suspension the reason Utd couldn't compete with Barca in the champions league final a few years back.
Johnny Evans looks a decent player, would easily get into every squad in the premiership.
Cleverley looks a bang-on prospect... wouldn't mind him down 'the mighty blues'.
Welbeck has just gone out on loan to a prem side after impressive last season in the championship.
and so on and so on...

Cantona wasn't, about 1.1m IIRC? Sherigham was cheap (don't know the figure), Solsjaer was about £750k IIRC (Irwin was 600k off us!), not sure on York but it didn't strike me as a 'BIG' signing.

yeah exactly, fairly cheap... Yorke may have been a fair whack off villa but still...
Butt was regarded by Pelé as the best player at the 2002 world cup, Beckhams international record speaks for itself, saying they did nothing for England is stupid.

Abramovich made Chelsea good by ploughing fortunes into them and signing a good manager, he didn't suddenly make the EPL a league where only a few clubs could win it. It has been like that throughout the history of it's existance and even further back when it was 'Division 1'.
Ignorance indeed.

A recent sports article:

Nobody spends bigger than Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool - it's just that City have squeezed a decade of investment into the space of two summers.
