tbh a noisy Vanos unit isnt the worst thing to go wrong, i'd be more worried about bent cars as anything mechanical can be sorted out.
If it has been looked after the following should be checked off the list:
Vanos been serviced
Valve clearences checked (shims changed where neccessary)
The rest is pretty run of the mill maintenance IMO i.e renewal of bushes etc

Alan 3.2 Estroil Blue with Loutus leather, drive it around for a year and sell it for what you bought it for job done.
Don't supose anyone can tell i've been looking at them for a while Also tempted by an E46 vert at the moment too

If it was between an Astra VXR and M3, it would be no contest for me. The BMW is most certainly a better drivers car. I know people will come in here and go tits about that, but it just is. There's no doubt the Astra will be just as capable, but it won't have the same feeling. And I've been put right off turbo cars now.

Probably cheaper to run too. And if you listen to the internet, you'll be replacing a gearbox or vanos unit

THIS is why im tied between them! but in all seriousness if someone came up to me with a low mileage well maintained M3 Evo and a range of todays latest hot hatches to choose from and WASNT allowed to sell them on i would choose the M3 all day long! Call me crazy/old fashioned!!
Thats how highly i rate the E36 M3 as said before one of the most underestimated cars! Especially for its time!

Fad knows his shit. Also I've said it before so I'll say it again. If your worried about a £700 bill for Vanos then don't buy an M3. I had a bent axle in my z3 and it was going to cost £3000 to replace.
They are not cheap cars to run. This is why you have to be careful when buying one. Too many people buying them on a budget and patching them up on the cheap so end up ropey

Tbh, £700 for such a vital component isn't THAT bad. Considering it costs over a thousand for my dad to get the front brakes done with a service from a Subaru Dealer No, they aren't brembo's either
