My mate sits behind lorries on the M25 trying to achieve the best mpg to compete with his gf's Ibiza Cupra TDI (which gets about 60+mpg )

If you don't believe it then that's up to you

does this not defeat the point of having a nice sporty hatch? would you want to drive it to put a smile on your face> or would you rather sit behind lorries doing 55mph?

if you did that with a diesel, you;d prob get 75mpg in that case lol

It all depends on how many miles you do. If a lot then diesel is the way to go, but unless it's a sporty one like a vRS or Cupra it'll probably be boring as fuck.

i've got a diesel golf, its fine for what i want it for, not particularly arsed about romping round on country lanes anymore. before i bought it i was putting £200+ of petrol in my integra, which i couldn't really justify anymore. i wasn't going out and spanking it everywhere, that was literally just driving to and from work, seeing the missus etc.

there are times i miss the revving ability of the integra, or anything petrol for that matter, but i don't miss having to rev the shit out of it round town to ever make any progress. so swings and roundabouts, i'm happy with the diesel but do miss the revviness of the teg sometimes. i certainly don't miss running it though

Comparing like for like

Golf Gti 2007 40k Miles – £12k
Gold GT Tdi 2007 40k Miles - £12k

Insurance

Golf Gti 2007 - 17
Gold GT Tdi 2007 – 16

Yearly saving = £101

Tax (12 Months)

Golf Gti 2007 - £245
Gold GT Tdi 2007 – £165

Yearly Saving = £80

Fuel based on 8000 miles a year (combined MPG figues)

Golf Gti 2007 – 34mpg = £1340 @ 129 per litre
Gold GT Tdi 2007 – 47mpg = £1067 @ 138 per litre

Yearly saving = £273

Total saving with the diesel = £38 a month or less than £500 a year.

At the end of the day 500 quid is 500 quid but I’m happy to pay that to own a petrol and actually enjoy driving.

So glad I have a derv over the same petrol

In almost all circumstances its quicker than the similar petrol version

Tax is £30

Average of 56 -57 mpg

Range of over 700 miles

13% for my BIK

list goes one really but I would certainly be out of pocket if I had the petrol version

People are comparing a 260+ petrol car to a 100+ derv so isnt fair

I would be interested to see comments for like for like

I.e 335i vs 335d etc

In my experience, diesels go for more money. This would wipe out a £500 saving fairly easily. I've no experience of the prices of those particular models.

well top gear raced the 535D Vs the M5, and the difference was marginal.

a rece around their test track, the 535 was like a second or so slower.

and the M5 engine, when idling, sounds like a diesel anyway lol

actually an 06 plate 2.0 GTi would prob cost around 9k - 10k.

and for the same price yo u could get an 06 - 07 2.0 TDi GT sport.

so its actually quite similar.

Infact it was the 545i with 362bhp, still 140bhp less than the M5.

Yes in the case of Golfs, for the same year/mileage the prices are very similar, this isn't the case for some other diesel variants such as the Scirocco/Mk 2 TT, they are about £4k more

A lot of people seem to say that diesel cars cost more, but you sell them for more too?

I am saving £100 a month on fuel, 300 on insurance, and 100 on tax.

Running quick petrol car as a daily is worst thing ever. I got used to the power of BMW and started driving it slowly. So whats the point of driving a petrol car slowly if you can drive diesel car at same speed and it will cost less to run.
