Better build quality
Better styling (debatable)
Better residuals
Faster
More options
4WD
Don't look as much of a chav (perhaps more like a hairdresser)

All the fundamentals really.

I kinda see what your saying. I'd rather have a new shape S3, which I suspect is a much better car over the clio if I had to have a hot hatch at that price.

Like the clio but hate matte colours. I agree with A2H G0 if i had 20k i would try and get the best possible car i could with that. Buying brand new to me is stupid and just not for me

That's not the point I'm getting at Ash.

Servicing, fuel, insurance, tax, parts all more expensive and it's NOT A HATCH.

So a useless comparison. I see what your saying but its a bit of a pointless thing to say its not worth it. Because if it wasnt worth it you wouldn't be able to buy a nearly new TT as nobody would have bought new.

New vs new in the same segment. No point saying that Ferrari F355 is only £30k so why would I buy a TT? Fast, better build quality, better materials, better noise much. Enter styling etc etc etc

And if you lease it, you won't pay £20k for it. Plus you won't have to worry about MOTs, expensive gear box rebuilds or anything like that. Plus it comes with 4 new tyres, new brakes all round, wiperblades, bushes, steering wheel garuntee that it's never been smoked in, crashed, stolen, badly repaired or a heap. Covered if anything goes wrong.

You can't argue the two as they are different ways of buying a car. Somebody in the market for a hot hatch won't be looking at an old TT.

I know mate that's why I said "I'd rather have a second hand TTS/[insert generic better car]" it wasn't a generalisation. Were not talking old either, 12-18 months at most so most of the things you've mentioned above still apply.

Maybe its just me getting old as I used to love the Renault sport range.

But the running costs still apply as does the lack of practicality!

£5k just vanish into thin air

shows how made up the prices up really, if they can lose £5k, people really are sucked in by new cars, but as said before, i'm glad people do buy them to keep the 2nd hand car market fresh

if i saw something for £20k and was thinking of buying it, and then they said it could be £15k instead, i would go mad thinking i'm buying a £10k car in reality and they nearly stitched me up for £20k

didnt vanish just never got presented with the book price

Did have to even try and get money knocked off they just did it

Its like second cars on dealer forecourts - no one pays the advertised price - they are priced for new car buyers i.e the new car salesman can go " look how much a 3 yr old one costs so they don't lose money"

and if your trading a car its irrelevant how much you get for your car or how much they knock off the new car - its about how much you have pay to pay extra

its called marketing Jim - please live in the 21st century

All retail outlets do it - i,e why does DFS always have a sale. So they can make out your getting something for a lower price when they shoudl just have a low fixed price all year round

end of the day your still paying their wages/overheads, which puts me off dealers. The fact they can change prices about and make you feel like the winner, just puts me off.

I think its "salesmen" i don't like, usually all up their own arse

DFS customers are almost the exact same sort of people that go into a car dealership and buy a new nearly bottom of the range car every 3yrs because the brake pads wear out and mean the car is risky to drive

i don't agree with the DFS sofa shop either, its like the eisenegger sale and i wouldn't go into eisenegger.

-DFS Sofa
-Eisenegger outdoor jacket
-Ford zetec on the drive

If you feel like a winner because they've 'discounted' the car to going rate that's your problem, not the dealers.

So unless you can't decide what a car is worth before you speak to a saleman there's no problem really

you dont go into dfs shops because you live at home with your mum like a raging perverse night stalker wannabe.

dfs are crap though, my sofa is a bad desigb, had them out 3 times in 18 months to repair it.

i also have a fiesta zetec but it cost me 8495 and not bullshit salesman price 12995

yeah, i've never needed a sofa, bought a bensons bed though, was half the price it should of been. £1800, but special price of £899 to me

My mates asked me what bed i got, i explained it all, but really all they wanted to know was the price, i said £899, then they all start coming out with, yeah mine was a £1600 bed, or i have a £1000 bed. couldn't tell me anything about the bed but the price.

i suspect they are quoting the pre sale price anyway.

i feel the same with certain cars, your not driving £20k worth of car. In reality my bed is probably a couple of hundred pounds worth and i know it.

There is, 99% of the time the car is worth less than the dealers best price (understandably they have to make money) which is why I don't waste my time with them in the first place.

How can the car be worth less than the best price?

If you can't possibly get that car cheaper anywhere else you are getting it for exactly what it's worth.

The car costs less money than that to make yes, that's just getting stupid though.

I forget we're talking 'new' here. My comment applys to 6 month+ old cars.
