I don't get whats gone on here can someone explain?
Was '4 Pics 1 Word' not around before 'picture word'?
I always thought picture word was just a rip off of 4 pics 1 word' as that's been popular for ages and lots of rip offs have popped up since...

4 pics 1 word have just released a new game called Pic Combo which is exactly the same as my mate's game - this is after tweeting him a month ago to tell him they thought it was a great concept:

It's a bit harsh and a bit cheeky but it happens. Unfortunately, they've got the bigger audience and i suspect the uptake of their Pic Combo game (which to be honest does look visually better) will better Picture Word; so they've kind-of screwed it for him.
As i said a few pages back, everyone and their dog are doing mobile app development and throwing out apps, more so now you have tools like PhoneGap which opens it up to HTML monkeys. He'd be better off targeting Windows Phone and Blackberry where they're struggling to get decent apps.

4 Pics 1 Word came out (no doubt based on another concept); loads of similar apps came out; Picture Word is a variation of that concept; devs behind 4 Pics 1 Word liked that idea and essentially produced something near enough similar.

Also he kinda just ripped off 4p1w with his idea...
If he's sensible he'll be working on his own idea now. Or at least a massive overhaul for his game

I've contacted all the tech blogs - Mashable, Lifehacker, TechRadar, TechCrunch, TechHive, PCWorld, The Register, Kokatu, Gizmodo... who have I missed?

His game is similar, but distinct from 4p1w.
Pic Combo is similar, and, uhh, similar to Picture Word - an injustice has been committed.

This happens all the time, it's a non-story (Picture Word isn't a new concept, it's a variation of 4 Pics 1 Word and other apps) and any tech blog or news site worth reading won't give a crap.
Best thing Rob's friend can do is move on and produce new apps.
Edit - Fact no one is biting on Reddit shows you how much of a non-story this is

I thought the inclusion of the tweet might make it more interesting than your average IP theft story because the evidence is there.

Right, so they had the cheek (or bollocks; depends how you look at it) to comment to say they liked the idea...awesome. Now What?
Secondly no IP theft has been committed - it's a variation (Pic Combo and Picture Word aren't exactly the same) of a pre-existing concept, a concept that isn't protected. Similarly, you could argue that Picture Word is a concept entirely based on 4 Pics 1 Word.

I'm with you now!
TBH gone are the days whereby indi devs can release an app that is successful without having millions of £££ for advertising, infrastructure, the right contacts etc (on iOS and Android at least).
Feel sorry for this guy because he's obviously staked a lot on this app which in itself is a good concept.
When I started on eBay I was the only one selling certain products, before long other bigger business popped up with the same idea.
I started recordedcars.co.uk with a unique concept, but without £££ to drive people to the site, even the best idea in the world isn't enough.
I've been teaching myself to program for the last couple of years and have just moved to C++ with a view to moving to Objective-C. I'm not doing this to make the 'magic' app that will make me loads of money (despite having plenty of idea's for such apps) but rather to work for companies that have said budget, infrastructure and contacts.
That's exactly what I suggest this guy does, whilst continuing to make apps for himself on the side if that's what floats his boat.

Firstly good to see Lee got his macbook air okay, although that campaign didn't have the effect I'd have liked and they've nipped in and copied the idea before I could generate some traction in the charts, at least someone's done well out of it!
I was pretty angry earlier but there's not a lot I can do - they can generate 100,000 downloads in an hour through a quick push notification to their existing user-base, even if I'd chucked £5k at a click-per-install campaign I can't compete with that.
I haven't really staked a lot on this particular app, I have many out there earning money already and many more in the pipeline, including a few longer-term projects which would be harder to replicate. I also sell app templates and code to other developers, have some contract work on the go, do excel consultancy etc, so putting my eggs in lots of baskets.
The Macbook Air giveaway was an experiment to try and generate the downloads you need in the first few days after release to have a shot of competing with the big boys. I've had two apps in the top 10 with a combined 2 million downloads so it is possible, but there's a lot of luck involved.
Of course it's frustrating to have missed out on a potential 'home run' - I quite fancied an early retirement.

Have you thought about porting your app to blackberry/windows phone?
Interested to know what your other apps were that made the top 10, was that a while back?
How long have you been developing for iOS out of interest?

I have, but it would mean moving to a different dev kit and learning new languages - there's only so many hours in the day!
Football Logos Quiz and Football Kits Quiz made the top 10, around June and August time.
Started developing about 18 months ago as a hobby, it was going well so it didn't make sense to carry on full-time with my day job as I'd be losing about 42% of my app revenue in tax and student loans. I initially quit my job but before I left they asked me to consider doing 2 days a week, which has worked out quite well.

18 months and you're putting out app like this, did you do programing/computer science at university?
Fair play, you've obviously got it all planned out and doing alright for yourself, I hope you get the break you're looking for one day.

Cheers. No I don't have a degree in it, I've always dabbled since I got a C64 at eight, but lost interest at college as the computing course was so tedious and the teacher was a dick - ended up doing business studies at University.
