Crocs ftw.
This. Unbeatable arch support and shock absorbtion in my experience. But only round the house instead of slippers. (tendon damage in foot)
I've got a really nice pair of O'neil flip flops that i've not been able to wear in ages cos of my foot woes.
Birkenstocks are good also, but I can only wear mine for short periods as i've still not broken them in and find them too hard.
Crocs were advised by my Chiropodist and they've been a life saver.

I'd feel a bit silly wearing them outside, as I consider them slippers. Would feel EXACTLY like walking down the street in my slippers. Special needs anyone?
They have to be in a neutral colour too or they look ridiculous.
Mine are in a sort of nondescript, mushroom/beige/brown/tan/greyish sort of colour, so they're fine for slobbing about the place in long shorts and a tee shirt, but you wouldn't feel like a gimp with a ball-gag on when answering the door in them.
All the other colours just look wrong unless you're a woman or a child.

I would have thought you'd need covered shoes in kitchens due to spills

I've never seen someone who would pass as 'normal' in a pair of crocs, outdoors.
