Correct but if you spend a bit of time researching the faults you can buy an example with all common issues repaired under Audi warranty. Oil leak your friend is experiencing will almost certainly be oil cooler and/or pipes. Audi in their infinite wisdom fitted an aluminum cooler with mild steel pipe fittings
You seem to know a fair bit about the B7 RS4. They're getting into my price bracket for buying one now but the "internet" scare mongering of the running/maintenance costs are putting me off. Are they really as bad as people make out?? New brakes costing over a grand etc??
Don't be put off by the scare mongering online. My only advice would be to find an example with history of DRC suspension work - could be looking at £2k if you are unlucky enough to require the full system replaced. Many owners fit coilovers when they have a DRC failure, and to be fair, I'll probably do that to mine if the remaining 2 unchanged shocks decide to give up on me (it's question of when rather than if). Other things to look out for are history of work on the oil cooler and pipes, auxiliary radiators leaking and correct operation of exhaust flaps (gives good indication of healthy vacuum system).
Brakes are a shitter as you say but provided you only have to do 1 axle at a time, you can do it for much less than a grand each axle. Although the front brakes are flawed in their design, not many owners fit aftermarket brakes. I'm not completely clued up on the prices but I'd like to think the costs of maintenance are no worse than a marque of equivalent performance from another manufacturer. Their overall value has also leveled out in recent times and low mileage examples are even climbing. You could arguably offset that against any maintenance costs you incur during ownership

It's a bike with the front wheel off, which is exactly what I do if I put it on the roof aswell due to using Thule carriers. A bike frame would be a bike with no wheels on or otherwise known as a frame. I think you'd actually be hard pressed to fine a car or estate that a whole bike would fit into with both wheels still on.

Skoda Octavia Estate 220bhp. Obviously not as quick as either the BM or Audi, but still nippy, and comfy and got all your mod cons.

Depends on what your enquiring about. Every car I bought was researched for common problems on relevant sites before I bought them. I accept things can go wrong with any car at any time but at least you have a slight clue on what to look out for when viewing instead of going in blind.
The only car I didn't research was the vxr and that cost me dearly, to the tune of £1360 after only 3 weeks of ownership. It was only when I looked to see if anyone else had this problem that I found out 90% of them had chocolate gearboxes.

Its not the labour costs that bother me as most independent garages are the same, it's the price for parts on an RS4. £2k if the standard suspension goes tits up (which seems to be a common thing) £500+ for front brakes. That to me is a hard pill to swallow as I'm not made of money lol.

Get one with all the common issues sorted then you can expect pretty trouble free motoring. It took me nearly 18 months of serious hunting to find one in the spec I wanted with the history to back it up.

Exactly, why rush into a cheap shitter just because you can cripple yourself trying to afford the finance on it then expect it to be perfect.

People need to be a bit more realistic too. You're talking damn near supercar performance, you can hardly expect maintenance costs of a 2ltr tdi

Is this on par with an M5 though? No so why suggest cars he has no interest in?
He has made it pretty clear he wants a performance car

an rs4 is slower than an m5 by quite a bit but I am still interested in one.

Depends what you're after I suppose If you're a tail-wagging, side ways fun having loon then the M5 is better in every respect If you like the buzz from leaving the line like you've been fired out of a cannon and going around bends like you're on rails and gravity has been rotated by 90 degrees then the RS4 is for you
