I would sooner us keep Alonso and not bother with Barry...although I can see Rafa's thinking...Barry is proven in the prem...takes penalities...gets stuck in and can play anywhere down the left and centre mid...

Alonso is strictly a defensive CM...

I'd class him as a playmaking midfielder, not stuck infront the the defence like Masch but also has the ability to get forward and take a few shots. He has been limited in the past for us playing next to Gerrard where he has had to sit, but with Masch next to him he will have much more freedom.

Hes a defensive playmaker then...nothing more...

He doesnt ever get ahead of the ball (like Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes) therefore I would label him as defensive..

Yeah Im not saying he is an attacking midfielder by any means, but he isnt the same as Masch either who is a purely defensive midfielder. Alonso's best place is sat in the middle of the park controlling games and distributing the ball all over the show - thats something Barry cant do.

I cannot recall Gareth Barry scoring from inside his own half......twice!!! Take away his pens last season and he didnt score many goals!!! He certainly wont pull rank in terms of pens when Torrard are playing

Plus the banter you could have by saying Arsenal signed a 'Liverpool reject' would be immense!

You'd change your mind if he was ever sold to another team

I wont.

It doesnt happen very often as we arent a selling club, but he will be one player to leave that I really dont want to and know he'll go on to be an even better player than he is now.

Off AV's offy site...

'The report in today's paper of a £17m offer for Gareth Barry is inaccurate.

The club have received a renewed offer from Liverpool for the player but that still falls well short of Aston Villa's evaluation, and has subsequently been rejected.'

Hopefully that is the end of this rubbish then and we can keep Alonso and get on with signing players in positions we need.
