little update - went too see my mate this afternoon after going to look at a mars red mk1 golf gti (i like), and hes confirmed for me that my rattle is infact piston slap and has advised me to strip the engine, get some forged pistons and an over bore. im hopin that i can do it on my current engine so that i dont need to change the bearings again

id have given up by now, does seem there are some very naughty c20xe's knocking around last one I remember for being so troublesome was AK's which incidentally was also in a stripped out white shell (well it was when it finally died anyway)

bores are "nicely" polished no the trust and opposite sides , and there is slight marks on the big end crank journal for no2 conrod where the shell has worn through to the copper
also asked if they can acid dip the block for me as the paint on it reacted with something and it looks like someone had thrown sand at it

it took about 1hr to remove the engine in total and it was stripped in 3hrs outside in the freezing cold
