Hornets.
First one I ever saw scared the shit outta me. It was on the washing line in our villa in France.
I didn't know they existed so I thought it was a killer wasp or something like that Honestly about 8cm long.

hornets are not 8cms long we get them around our house fairly often in the summer
Id say about 4cms is about right, even that one on that hand although looks massive is exagerated by the angle of the pic, put a ruler on your hand in the same position that wasp is in, its nowhere near as big as 8cm

Nah, I don't think any species of wasp can reach 8 cm.
Wikipedia and Google seems to suggest somewhere around 4-5.5 cm as the maximum size.
Pull out a ruler and measure 8 cm - that's fricking long for a wasp.
Unless the pictured hand above is abnormally large or small, the wasp on it is around 3-4 cm.

Ever been stung by one? I hear it's a wonderful experience.
Remember being woken by the sound of one in my room, as a kid. Sounded more like a helicopter than a wasp.
At least that's how I recall it...

I didn't, but it just goes to show that variations of the wasp species can get massive.
I know the size of the hornet as it was about the same size of the clothes peg on the washing line.
