Sicily to Rome; Supercars tested to destruction
Yesterday's drive from Sicily to Rome was absolute chaos, and like day five of last year's rally (Morocco) there were crashes right, left and centre. The Buick is completely out of the rally, the driver said he was going fairly slowly when it span out and for his insurance's sake we'll run with that.
A Ferrari 355 was also written off between Naples and Rome, and the silver Porsche GT drifted 300 metres down the Autostrada bouncing both nose and tail off the barriers. That's been gaffer taped up and is still on the rally, but the Lamborghini Murcielago isn't so lucky...
The Lambo got impounded in Belgium within hours of being on the rally, so it's driver called up for his Maclaren F1 to be delivered to him immediately. His F1 was taken out of the rally between Budapest and Dubrovnik (not sure whether it was impounded or crashed) so the relentless Gumballer paid £6000 to have his Lamborghini released, and another £6000 to have it driven to Bari (how many of you would have done that for free?!).
Then disaster struck a final blow when his freshly delivered Lamborghini was written off between Sicily and Naples. He only bought it on the Thursday before the rally, so drove it for a total of 8 hours before it was destroyed!
In other Lamborghini news, Jodie Kidd rinsed the clutch on her's, so her and fiancee Ben are having to take it easy for the rest of the rally.
Alex Roy proved his legendary status once again yesterday by getting to the Sicilian ferry port by 8:25am and cordoning it off with police tape. He then sailed alone on a ferry to mainland Italy and "cruised at 8/10ths" (140mph in torrential rain) towards Rome, sirens and lights on continuously.
The M5 cop car is permanently online and get updates on the positions of other Gumballers, so it didn't come as a suprise when it's lead was threatened by a blue Porsche Turbo being driven brilliantly by Spencer Bourne.
A 90 minute battle ensued taking the cars all the way into Rome, with the Porsche overtaking on clear roads and Alex using his sirens to take the lead when traffic built up. Eventually the Porsche slipped back due to Spencer's "poor toll booth strategy" and "poor GPS strategy" (wrong turn) leaving the delighted cops claiming another victory.
This morning I went on the hunt for gadgets and will type it up right now, so find out which car has a cloaking device in a few hours!

He is just a gumballer in a replica police car.
He got the full works including the megaphone.
He pulled on of the Lambo`s last year and filmed it.

Also from extreme.
Gadgets on Gumball 3000
As we cruise north through Italy on the final straight of the Gumball 3000, here's a look at seven absolutely amazing modifications and gadgets on this year's rally, in rough order of practicality.
1. The ice cream van is fully functioning, so although it's not necessarily a modification, the ability to make ice creams at any time is still a ridiculous gadget.
2. 888.com's stretched Hummer has a not-so-minibar, enough seats for about ten people and a sick entertainment system with plasma screens and game consoles. If blacked out windows could talk...
3. Bez's van has an orgasm chair in the back of it. This is probably the most incredible gadget on the rally - it's a leather seat almost made of speakers, designed for the sensual women. Custom audio specialists Fuel lent the van to Bez because his pimped out taxi is three weeks behind schedule. That's due to have a mixing desk in the pack and be powered by a 5.5litre chevy engine, but no word yet as to whether Bez is going to get an orgasm chair.
4. Richie Warren is the owner of Fuel (www.liquidinjuredhearing.com) and had been on five Gumball 3000s. He's travelling in a Dodge Challenger with a deafening 5000 watt sound system in, including a set of speakers that rise up on hydraulics out of the bootspace like a spoiler. Richie's car fits him perfectly; it's rock n' roll at it's rawest - completely trashed inside with CD's, porn and screwed up maps all over the place. Gotta love the fact he spent £20,000 installing audio equipment but didn't bother with a fancy GPS system.
5. The Maclaren SLR, many say is the most prestigious car on the rally, has a full cloaking device. It's not your run of the mill radar detectors, it's an invisibility shield you'd expect the US military to use. This probably helped him get away with a ruthless 216 mph blast in Croatia.
6. Remy's Mercedes CLK DTM is one step away from a Death Star, with more electronics in it than Dixons and none of it for show. He's got a rear view camera piped through to an LCD screen on the dash, to save using the mirrors. It has an onboard PC with broadband internet access, which he uses to get new tunes when he's bored of his CDs, and it did have a CB but he ripped the aerial off because the extra drag was costing him 4mph off the top end (around 195mph). Like lots of the Gumballers he has a videocamera bolted to the dash, but I doubt many of them went to the trouble of getting an image stabilisation mounting for it. And although he has so many radar detectors, reflectors and scramblers that when he pulls into motorway services the toilets stop automatically flushing, and he also has a pair of binoculars for the passenger to spot cops with. It may seem ridiculous but at 180 mph he covers a mile every 20 seconds!
7. You could write a book about Alex's cop car. It has a lot of the features that Remy's has, but of course it's painted up like a replica Spanish police car and has working sirens, tannoy and flashing lights (which Alex uses all the time). He also has a range of cop disguises including replica cop badges from the various countries we're visiting, aswell as reels of police "road closed" tape, signs and more.
