No...
1. Fill the tank up with water and use conditioners to remove the chlorine
2. Add an ammonia source (goldfish, pure ammonia, etc.)
3. Leave for a week or so with the filter, heaters, etc. running while the bacteria grows in the filter
4. Do a 40% water change to remove the Nitrates (this is what the filter changes the ammonia into)
5. Add a few of your fish (most hardy)
6. Add a few more about 5 days later, etc. etc. etc.
This will give your filters a chance to build up slowly and your fish the best chance to survive.

some people also add a bit of gravel or a rock from an established aquarium to help baterica get started

yup, its one of the easiest ways to speed up the process.
If your filter can be removed from your old tank, add it to the new one with your exisiting fish and this will take care of the filtering while your new one builds up the bacteria!

your all set then mate. Just carry on with that list and it'll be running in no time!
Dont forget to keep up with the weekly water changes (about 20% IMO) after it is set-up or you'll soon have a problem!

The only tank Ive got up and running at the moment is the Rio 400 (115Gal) and it has a built in filter which is running at around 750GPH.
On the 265Gal and 150Gal pictured I had a wet/dry (sump) filter which I had running at 4x tank size an hour (this was so the water had a better retention time in the sump)
I'm picking up my new 180 and 150Gal at the weekend and Im going to run one centralise 75Gal wet/dry, all plumbed in with rigid pipe.

Grab one of your mums old par of tights, shove some of the gravel from the old tank in one of the legs, tie it up and put it in the new filter next to the filter material.
The bacteria in the gravel will double every 24hrs and grow onto the media quicker

i get it at work all the time. i ask "so how big is your tank then?"
and get a reply "errr 150 litres mate"
so then i ask about the dimensions and they just put their hands out and go
"this big"

If you put them in the filter for now (not lose as they may fuck something up!) then the bacteria will colonize on the filter pads. After that they can go in the tank.
The good bacteria cant float in the water so it wouldnt do much good if its not next to the filter pads!

doing it in the filter means that the bacteria is able to grow onto the foam filter pads quicker and easier. its like filter media in theory, in my filter i have ceramic, carbon, foam, polyester and another type of ceramic pre filter.

ive had mine for about a year now and its going ok, annoying thing is, after ive cleaned the cannister out, and prime the thing again, all the crap comes out the pipes into the tank again but now just have to put a net in front of the outlet.
