Love the optimism mate, but I think you'll find contracting really isn't quite as easy as you think

Again, this isn't a dig at anyone.
I personally find it interesting how people are doing one job, but want a completely different career path. I guess it's because of the lack of opportunities or something when at school? Or lack of focus etc? I've gone to Uni so I can pursue a career I want to be in, which will hopefully stop me wanting to do anything else and lose earnings etc.
Find me a team willing to take a new "race" driver on for an agreed wage (that at least matches my current) and i'd be off like a shot.
I wanted to race, I could not afford to. Lack of direction and guidence when I really needed it (14-20) so ended up doing what I was ok at from school.
I know of at least 10 people who have worked in IT, and left to start a new career.
Its one of those jobs you work at, and your either a techy bloke who stays in, or you get so far and think, "i've had enough".
I left a big flashy city well paid job to come and work 20 minute from home, 30 min more per day, no OT, no luxery travel, over £6k less money etc..
Was it worth it, very much so, best decision i've made yet, but still don't want to work in IT. But while its paying the house off..........
AS soon as I can decide what I want to do (italian bike dealership (Benellis, MV Augusta, Bimota etc), but I need about £300k-£500k, to get the stock in), but totally out or reach at the moment.

Not sure on my aim, either just progress in the technology side of the financial sector or move into the financial markets side.
Definetely want to stay in finance though whatever I do.

Age - 26.
Previous jobs :
Lab Technician / chemical field specialist - for a large petro chemical company, done this for 5yrs, lost a contract & made redundant.
Then:
Quantity Surveyor/Estimator for a large newbuild contract company - done this for 3yrs & hated it wanted out the office onto the tools so left.
Current job :
Undergoing intensive training to be a Process operator / I&C Maintenance technician Offshore on either an oil/gas platform or FPSO.
Future Aim - Short term is become fully trained in my job, then in time take a more senior role, or possibly get into the commissioning side of things, possibly if I become a company man possibly make it as an OIM, which is where the big earnings are to be made.
Money : Training wage is c.£16k, Time Served (2yrs away) is c.£52k, Commissioning/OIM (maybe one day!) is £120k+.

I was in a similar position when I was about 11, wanted to start karting but couldn't as my dad couldnt afford the 30k minimum needed to race!

I live in Grangemouth, used to work for BP Grangemouth Refinery.
Then for a company called Nalco that took over the water treatment in/out, ETP, Demins etc
Wish id went to Uni looking back now! Wasted a good few years doing other things!
I start a 2 year placement offshore early 2009, currently doing training through Opito Training Management.

Currently a health trainer, wouldn't mind trying to get up into the department of Health, thats only way i'll end up on big bucks, need to get in the nhs first and move up there. Currently employed for a community partnership from funding from PCT so there is kind of a chance. the next 5 year could be interesting, just depends on luck though, as i have no clear idea.

Surely there are hundreds of RICS qualified in the area.
And don't you mean APC?

You'd think that but nope! Theres only one in the centre. EPC/DEA (energy performance certificate/domestic energy assessor)
Just means i'll be able to offer all services required rather than employing a load of joeys to do it for me. There are loads of people training for the DEA qualification but i'll at least have contacts and clients to get business.
