tbh, gsi's and type R ep3's seem about the same in "quickness" on the road, but obv the CTR in standard form handles better
i'd rather the GSi as the tuning on a zlet is much better for money that the ep3 but if i was gonna go for a civ
it'd be an eg SIr
much more tuning available per £££

I like CTR's, have come round to them alot since they were released
drove one and been out in gavs, but IMO would go for the gsi if it was my £££

insurance is also a right bitch on the CTR
GSi are not that quick - they are not slow but certainly not quick
My mates mk3 VR6 swipped the floor with it and the CTR was also quicker but by a lesser margin
But again its not about out right speed
I think the CTR is a better package

Moral of the story
standard from the is type R is better
tuning wise the astra is better
It is not hard to choose between the two really

owmed a tuned gsi, gorgeous car especially in red or black
I got rid of mine not because it wasnt solid wellbuilt reliable and quick.
Was just boring, great mway cruiser and very comfy (had no back ache issues)
Never driven a ctr just so god damn hideous, probably a much better drive than the astra.
Get which one you like more tbh

Astra is rarer and better looking to imo
and for £500 the zlet will reach 160mph I doubt that would be the same for the CTR

Type R's can be taken to 260+bhp on a relative budget. And I just always remember Akeemkinds 300+bhp LET with a CTR stuck up his backside the whole time.
For me, CTR. Overall better car. Power power power from a FWD car does not make a good car. Usable power does.
Another vote for CTR + SC conversion here.

From a standing start the XE Corsa should pull away till about 90 then the Astra would catch it i reckon.
When i had my old XE Corsa up at Crail i raced a Mk4 Gsi.Pulled around 3 car lenghts on it from the off, couldnt beleive it when i looked in the mirror just as i was coming up to the line he reeled me in and passed me just on the line and took the win.Now i dont know if it was maybe tuned but i really didnt expect it to gain that much on me.My car was in full road trim and was pulling all the way to the finish line. The times were 15.8 for me with RT of 0.3 and a 60ft time of 2.5 and a terminal of 88mph.His were 15.4,RT 0.6 and 60ft of 2.7 and a terminal of 94mph.
And i'll always say i reckon the timing gear was wrong or the headwinds were high as the times for all the cars that day were mega high.
An R33 GTR doing 15s.Erm,ok then.

Terminal would suggest its either standard, or basic ph1, exhaust tuning.
Not much faster than the XE's terminal (i've done 92mph on the terminal of the 1/4).

Its how quick it reeled me in that shocked me.If it was on the open road he would have been bye bye.

You asked? Simple answer is flow work. what you think with your attitude that im going to sit here and fully explain it out to you?
If you don't think the way to tune NA engines is to work on the flow, the way the air gets in, and gasses come out, then I really don't need to add anything further, as you simply won't get it
I've read tec forums. If you have too, why are you asking me the question????
Yknow what, im not going there. I know vauxhalls, I know hondas. I'd have the honda. My style of driving, my choice.
SMB otherwise

Optimistic isn't it? 60bhp from headwork alone? I would say that the CTR engine is quite possibly at the peak of it's abilities already and a port and polish will make no difference.

I never said justheadwork Olly.....
Flow work is from the moment it comes in (i.e Induction) till the moment it exits the tailpipe. I.e your improving the flow of the gasses, which means you can add more fuel, more air, bigger explosion, more power.....
Headers, ram air, upgraded ecu, more fuel, more air etc....
People take a number too literally. What will give 30bhp on one engine, may give 40-50bhp on another....
Akeemkings friends one which he claimed hadn't had much work done to it, made over 250bhp.
ALWAYS going to be easier to just wack up the boost on a turbo and get more power. Turbo won't last as long though, thats why they flwo what they do in all standard cars. Best compromise of reliability, and power. Wack the power up, reliability comes down, turbo mileage comes down. But far easier to get power.

if you want my opinion then go for the gsi, my mate has one check it out
http://www.vxronline.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=40054
granted neil has spent a lot of time and effort on it! and certainly is not cheap but it shows you the potential of the car if you want to go that far!
i have been lucky enough to get a shot in it and by god it can shift!!!

I owned a mk3 astra gsi before i bought my mk4 arden blue astra gsi got it rolling roaded at standard power 147bhp and my mk4 is quicker, would rather have the gsi than ctr tbh, but everyonbe dont like the same cars, there good on fuel cheap to tune and very comfortable to drive glad i got one. my mate sold his mk4 gsi to buy a typr r, got type r didnt like it missed his mk4 gsi he bought another one lol.

having driven both I would still stick with the Astra
I love the lift off oversteer with the astra as well! Makes the drive more interesting!!
I have mild handling upgrades on my gsi
Whiteline ARB;s
Whiteine Caster Kit
Whiteline Front/Rear Camber kit
Eibach Springs
The car handles great, traction isnt a problem in a dry, you can floor it in 2nd and get no wheelspin etc even with 300+bhp and 380ft lbs
And im yet still to find a vxr that keeps up! Otherwise I would upgrade!
Just found this,
Autobahn fun
