Ian - there was a black civic out there as well... considering it was a vauxhall only track day, two civics, a punto, an mg and a datsun...

Our Phil mentioned this earlier on about me not letting Neil's Astra pass but the only car I technically held up was corsadonk's van because I'd passed him coming out of the second chicane but if he'd have overtook then I'd have been pushing to overtake again once we got back to the corners so he held back. With Neil by the time he'd caught me up I was all on the corner so I just held the racing line till I came out of Quarry and let him pass.

Silly Honda driver on a Vauxhall day. And I left my Ford at home

Every lap after his spin he went round that corner so slow that when he accelerated on the straight it was just all wheelspin. Sounded like it was powered by a couple of vuvuzelas too.

Yes if you want to go on track, you buy a pass, fill in a form with your name and address on, details of your emergency contact, show them your licence, hire a helmet or bring your own and you get a wrist-band.

Drive to the pits 15 minutes before the session time wearing said wrist band, you get guided in to the lane where you wait for the previous session to end, light goes green and you enter the track.

15 minutes later you'll see the chequered flag and be hooked

Oh and you also need the car noise testing, which is as difficult as driving to the guy with the sound level meter and revving your car to 4.5k next to him. He'll stick a sticker either at the top of the windscreen or front of the roof and you're approved to go on.

That is the Combe procedure, not 100% clear on Trax but I would guess it's very similar.

I don't have insurance, that is a risk but you're probably safer out there with people all paying attention than you are on a drive to the shops so long as you keep your eyes open and stick to the rules.

If you crash at a track day you're either trying too hard and come off on your own, or in the wrong place because you didn't take in everything at the briefing, or very, very unlucky indeed.

Crashing if you do everything according to the rules and know your limits is actually rather unlikely.

The speed isn't the issue, it generally feels slower either because cars around you are also going fast or because there aren't cars around you and the road is wider than you would normally have available to you.

And mirror signal is no joke, you need to know where other people are and let them know where you want to be. Other than that there's nothing really to know except that it's not a race and you'll come away equally happy just having driven the circuit as if you had gone really fast.

As I'm sure others will testify, it takes a while to get confident and a lot of the fun is working towards that. And you'll generally be in similar company.

Its ok mate, you didn't get in the way. Always concentrate on what your doing, then when its safe let people past, Not the other way round.

I agree with everything the leader has said.

Just be warned-

if you enjoy it and get the bug for it; it's a slippery slope down hill into spending lots of money.

Mike definitely doesn't run semi-slicks, he came out of Stu's car going on about how he needs them in his life

Nope, I'm on Eagle F1s atm, pretty good in the dry but show them a wet track and it turns out they're not too marvelous

After going out with Stu on a wet session and a dry session the r888s showed mine up completely, especially in the wet! But at the same time, you've got to have the commitment to use them otherwise as Ian says they're a waste of money, plus there's plenty of other factors that still have a major effect on the end result.
