Would this not be cheating

The site doesn't a multi quote function therefore I feel Dave is cheating us by not responding to each post individually

Mine is 1 page and my covering letter is 3 pages. CV shouldn't ever be longer than it needs to be

I don't have a covering letter though Mike
The 2nd time I got made redundant they brought in a load of "specialists" to help us find new jobs and I was told a CV should be 2 pages
That's what I've stuck with ever since

CV should never be over 2 pages anyway - even if you're Steven Hawking; you give enough detail to interest a prospective employer but not enough to answer any questions. That way, the interviewer has more to ask you and can gauge your response.

Employers are not interested in exactly what GCSEs you got; I literally just have

GCSE: 11 x Grade A* to B
A/S Level: Physics (B); Mathematics (B)
A Level: Art (C);Business Studies (A); Geography (B) Graphic Design (B);

That's everything from school in 3 lines - don't pad out a CV in the hope it'll look more impressive, I'm only really interested in Uni and above when I read a CV sent in to me and more importantly is experience. Again with experience, keep it short and to the point, detail job role, duration and key responsibilities.

Then a Personal Statement that should be a paragraph at most IMO - I want to eb intrigued enough to invite you for an interview, not bored by waffle!

Dear Ms. Nile

I refer to the position of Advertising Manager advertised in The Sun Newspaper on June 25, 2008. Please find attached my Curriculum Vitae, application form, and the required information specified in your advertisement.

I have 11 years experience in advertising in Britain and the United States. I am currently the Senior Vice President of Ajax Windows Inc, in Des Moines Iowa. I'm responsible for marketing for the firm's industrial contracts.

This position has a definite appeal for me, both on a personal and career basis.

I'm considering my career options at this point, after three years with Ajax. I feel it's time to move upward, and back into general advertising, rather than one dealing with a single product line exclusively.

Prettygood's very diverse lines of retail products are impressive. The standards of advertising copy and graphics are truly excellent, which has encouraged me to apply for this position. It's obvious that Prettygood has created a very strong, competent, in-house advertising team.

I have also recently done some independent advertising work outside the Ajax portfolio. Copies of this material are enclosed, and I hope they demonstrate my talents in the retail advertising sector. I did the layout, graphics, photography, and copywriting. These ads were quite successful when published, earlier this year. Newfax Supermarkets reported a 15% increase in sales, High Road Hotel and Restaurant 35%.

I believe I can add value to the Advertising Manager position through my years of experience and genuine enthusiasm for Prettygood's excellent work. Please contact me should you require any further information,

Yours sincerely

This is where you can write what you have actually done, what progression you made within the company, what changes you brought in etc.

And do the heading like a proper letter, your address etc top right etc etc etc

Like Rich alluded to I wouldn't include that as I'd want to be saying that kind of thing in an interview

Covering letters don't need to be long either; If that came to me, I wouldn't read it. Keep it short and sharp but make sure the layout is perfect.

Address

Dear Sir/Madam,

Re: Job Advertisement xxxxxxxxx

Please find enclosed a copy of my Curriculum Vitae in response to the above employment opportunity.

I am available for an interview at short notice and look forward to your response,

Best Regards

See I think thats exactly it, I was taught a specific way to do a cv at school, and have followed it ever since.

CV has qualifications, work experience, skill set, personal statement

Covering letter includes in greater depth work experience, skill sets, what you brought to the table in all relevant past jobs.
