I usually leave a little bit of cardboard over the windscreen directly where i look through and just let the heated screen do the rest. Walla

I want my neighbours to put a towel on theres as i want to sneak out in the night and pour water on it so the towel actually freezes to the car

Just cold water will be fine, squeegee rest off to stop freezing.

De-icer isn't good stuff for paint, wiper blades or window rubbers.
