United mid 90's were a successful business, iirc they had no or very little debt and had the ability to invest gate and tv money directly into the squad. Then along came the glazers, lumped a load of debt on the club and this has not helped them when trying to re-invest in the squad. I believe they would have been able to spend far more if the club was still owned by shareholders.

The City and Chelsea models are necessitated by the need to become successful fast in the league. Any club that was not near the top mid to late 90's would not break into the top 2/3 without big investment such as has been witnessed at both of these clubs. Like it or loath it thats the way things are now.
