ideally wouldnt want to spend more than £1k on getting the engine in and running... the rear of an imp would 100% lend itself to this conversion though...

look at suspension set up

Just had a look The gearbox would self destruct if it was turned like that..

The shafts sit behind the enigne would would put the engine in the middle of the car which makes far more sense, mounting a transverse engine in the boot is just stupid, it will drive like a complete pig.

also is it just the oil starvation that would cause self destruct?

mounting the engine mid is a lot of work to change the full suspension set up... was trying to avoid that?

this might be stupid but have you not considered just buying a MR2 or something RWD and engine mounted in the back any way

this is true, gearbox should have an oil flinger internally which relies on the oil sitting over it in volume

Lol this whole thread stems around rotating

If the back axle was rotated I don't think the rear suspension will change much..

I've seen an imp using standard? (Maybe uprated) transaxle, with a 1.3 106 rallye lump (all alloy and light) on bike carbs, don't know if internals were standard.

It was peddling at quite a rate around the track.

What is the issue with rotating the box? Just oil starvation?

basically yeah, oil would sit in the wrong parts of the box and not get to the right places. Also i think most boxes have breather holes in the top which could leak?

Holes aren't an issue they can be filled... In reality it will probably be an x16xe and it will be mid mounted somehow... as I think I've cracked how to mount the suspension.

youd still need a breather though lol, i suppose you could tap one on the other side of the box

youd still get starvation issues though mainly if the gear box has a 5th gear housing like the fords, if you turned that upside down the oil wouldnt circulate in there
