Billy big balls Barnes with his hand me down BMW.
Although Barnes is trolling, you have something against anything not VAG eck
I'm not into the whole BMW bumming which we seem to get on here but also wouldn't discount anything that's not VW related.

just generic vag stuff bores the living shit out of me. Yeah my next purchase will be a vw, but that's only because of its purpose and uses. Looking at roughly a 60 plate facelift t5.
My BMW might be old to you John, but I still think it's a great car and a decent looking design.

How so? It's quicker than the two I drove today, decent spec, better brakes than anything on the list... what's it a step down from?

The 135 is also pig ugly. If its the new one your testing that is. Plus its no different looking from any other 1 series IMO. Yes the same could be said of some vag cars but this is just to show that BMW is no different. I mean the old E46 M3 is supposed to be the ultimate driving machine, that's only when its not splitting in half lol.

Don't you need something to fit the dogs in?

The 135 is an absolute tool Robin. Upgraded turbos and it's a GTR killer, my mate had one and it was stupidly quick

Cannot fault our S3 in any way. Due to get rid in a few months and its not had a single fault or issue. Very well built, good on fuel, and just large enough for dog + 2 peoples luggage for euro trips. Just a little lifeless on the front end. New ones have 300bhp as well (ours is the 265bhp version, remap see's over 300!).
135 is a good car, but its ruddy ugly, I hate the dash, and useless in the snow.
What about a 2nd hand S4 with the 3.0 SC V6 engine? Remap makes them as fast as the RS4 V8 (see Evo's test). Subtle looks (bit bland), but loads of room, it'll do everything needed from a road car.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The S3 to me looks about as exciting as a lean salad. I think the 135 (old or new) looks fantastic, well proportioned and modern. The S3 looks boxy and dated. All IMO of course!
In the last 12months we have not seen one day of snow, so this to me is a very strange thing to consider when obtaining transport. Plus whilst I would agree most rwd cars aren't the best in snow, in my SMG with "winter/ice" mode I never had a problem last time it did snow.
Think you are doing the best thing Robin and Driving them. A mate drove the 135i and apparently whilst hugely fast and capable was a little too refined and "easy". So be interesting to see what you make of it.

I love the way the 1er Coupe looks, more so than the new shape hatch (although I like that too, arches look awesome on the rear quarter) if it drives anything like the new one we drove, it'll be brilliant.
The problem with the test drives is they haven't helped so far, we've driven 4 cars and with the exception of 1, I am no closer to deciding. I need an alternative test method!

Drove it. Couldn't put the seat far back enough to fit properly. Quick though.

Wasn't much in the way of space in the old Z3 IIRC

Ok so the 135i was a bit rough around the edges, although it was from a dealer the mileage was a lot highet than the others on its price range, not just a little bit higher, it also had a vinyl wrapped roof, aftermarket tints on the back windows and internet grilles.
It did have some decent bits though, BMW performance carbon interior trim, bmw performance short shift, bmw performance rear lip spoiler and the BMW performance exhaust, which sounded amazing!
The problem was the test drive route (for that and the Z4M) involved dual carriageway with a 40 limit and a flyover type roundabout. Couldn't really get a feel for the car at all other than working out that it's quick from 30 to something mph.
Went to look at a Focus RS too but the dealer was closing, they had two, one blue and one white, both looked great but obviously no test drive
Need to find another 135i to try with a proper test drive route really, plus a focus RS at the right time of day.
