I love American defence. The budget (plus what they don't tell us they spend) and all the leaked Snowden stuff is exactly like the movies and books have always made out, except even better.
Will take a lot more than a flight full of Dutch for America to step in but there is obviously a point that would happen.
Russia is really up and coming at the moment and large enough to be self sufficient, they probably genuinely don't care who they upset.

Russia are really coming out with some crap aren't they.
"It was in your airspace so its your responsibility"
"The Pro-Russians don't have any equipment capable"....er no because you have just moved it back into Russia on a low loader as caught on camera.
The Pro-russians won't let them investigate the crash (I don't count a 200m area of a 10mile area as giving access, specially when shots are fired"

I think if Russia did something to a UK or USA plane higher bodies in both UK/USA would be under alot of pressure to take some action against Russia

I think the decision to take military action on Russia in the event of a UK plane being downed with UK citizens on board would depend entirely on what China would do. If the decision makers had credible information that China wouldn't side with Russia than i think it could happen. However, if there was a chance that China would side with Russia (and i think they would)...than nothing will happen. We'll; eventually become lapdogs to Russia and China.

Whilst Russia's military spending doesn't compare to America's, they still have an impressive amount of fire-power considering - certainly they have better ground defence anyway (if you go by the various figures dotted around the web).

They probably would in the form of more sanctions; it certainly wouldn't be Europe taking military action against Russia however as it's simply not in Europe's (or anyone's for that matter) interests to do so as we've got too much to lose - as mentioned, we're heavily dependant on Russia's energy resources, to the point where it'd make the '74 rolling blackouts look like a piece of piss, and the majority of Europe lack the financials to back such a war effort.
In the same vain, i also believe Europe wouldn't be too hasty about helping out America if they decided to go to war; although Russia would use Europe as a pawn anyway.

You wouldn't want to start a war with Russia in the first place. Having China siding with Russia would just mean it'd be 'game over' before it even started.

The best thing Russia could have done is just said, "yeah we supplied the rebels with some anti aircraft to shoot down Ukrainian aircraft with, big whoop you wanna fight about it? We didn't know they were going to go shooting fucking everything out of the sky"
The rebels could then have just said "yeah, we shot it down thinking it was a Ukrainian transport, but wtf was a civilian flight doing flying over a warzone (in which aircraft are being shot down) anyways?"
It wouldn't change anything and they wouldn't look so silly, they'd look like hardnuts and Obama would be like "oh no you didn't, but at the same time this isn't worth starting World War 3 over so please be more careful in future"

Russian bombers doing a flyby today again, apparently the frequency of this event is far higher in the last few months than previous similar periods.

It won't end in war like 45 years of Cold War never ended in a shooting war either. It's all flexing of muscles

If i had a big plane i'd want to fly it, its not like you can fly them down your local park, Of course they are going to end up a bit near other countries imo.
Its like me driving near someones house, i have a car, i want to drive it, my driveway is only so long, of course i'll end up a bit near someone elses house.
