It does seem strange but they've been around for years. Cannondale have been the only company to champion them, although a good 5 - 10 years ago there was an aftermarket fork manufacturer doing them.
It does seem strange that they're still produce when all the mags talk about front end stiffness with tapered head tubes and 15mm axles on even the lighted XC/all mountain bikes.
It does seem strange.

I am in need of buying a new bike. In my mind I am happy to spend a grand on a hard tail but I DO NOT need that spec of bike for the riding I am going to be doing.
Limiting myself to £500 I think this might be my best option: http://www.bikeradar.com/mtb/gear/category/bikes/mountain/product/review-voodoo-hoodoo-12-46194
Unless anyone knows of anything better?

That bike gets rave reviews for the price. if you want to stick to £500 you can't go wrong.
I always end up blowing my budget. I sold my roadie which i'd bought for £750. I decided to spend no more than £750 on my hardtail.
Came away with a £1300 Cube!!!!! Probs more spec than i'll ever need but I can't resist a brand/flashy spec/cool colour scheme!!!!

I have that one, I can't fault it at all. Does the job, it is loud but I imagine most of them are in this price bracket.

Are these lights good then Simon?
I want some half decent lights so I can get out on my MTB in the evenings, get some practice in, but dont want to spend a fortune.

Better frame, better fork, better brakes and better drive train.

I use a Tacx Sirius. It's worth checking online reviews and videos of people using the turbo trainer you are going to buy. The key things to consider are smoothness or the rolling resistance and the noise.
Ultimately I hate using exercise bikes like you get in the gym as they don't feel like I'm riding a proper bike on a road. However on my tacx it does feel pretty good, you can just get in a good rhythm and then end up putting the resistance up to simulate sprinting up a hill or whatever.

So far it has been really good, to the point where I've had my exposure diablo on my helmet on low the whole ride. My only criticism so far is that the beam could be wider and less of a spot, I've used it on less than 10 rides so far so be good to see how many recharges the battery lasts but for the cost you can't complain.

I ordered a Lezyne light from Ribble in the end as I want it tomorrow so I can ride my bloody bike.
Not as bright as the one you have but I wont be gunning it in the dark just yet. Ill buy brighter as and when I need it.
Pedals came today!

Jamie I run 2 of those lights one the bike and the other on my helmet I can't fault it. If you are planning on riding trails at night then you need a bright light how many lumens is the one you have bought

I found my exposure diablo perfectly adequate to be honest which is 975 lumens. Best world is defiantly one helmet one handle bar though, means you can look into the undergrowth and try and work out where the freaky noises of the night are coming from

I must admit when I'm out night riding and think about what I'm doing I get a bit freaked out. Especially on quiet country roads

It will be fine.
Just been playing out in the street getting used to my new pedals. Got used them really quickly and that bike shifts without much effort at all.
Need to fiddle about with seat height etc to get it bang on. Looking forward to getting muddy!

I saw some about that lumen figure but there was talk of external batteries. I just wanted a light that was pretty decent so I can start riding my new bike and didn't wanna be carting battersea power station about with me.
I think once I'm really into it I'll invest in something more powerful but for what I have available to me locally in terms of trails what I've ordered will be fine. If it isn't I'll stick it on my road bike
I looked on a site that was comparing lights and they had then on in a tunnel, I swear one of the lights was more powerful than my range rover xenons are on full beam
