you can make big distances as easy or hard as you want though.
Im still more amazed by the speeds some cyclists get over shorter distances

Train for it and its possible. Do nothing and you will never maintain speeds like that.

Yeah - it's also down to your pain threshold too .... You can see how long distances and quick speeds are very much in the head as well - it's amazing his much easier the same route one day is compared to another depending on your frame of mind lol

Also big distances on a road bike is never ever as hard work as off road distances. Road biking is relatively easy work. Smooth surfaces, minimum resistance skinny tyres and light bike.
Personal opinion from doing a bit of both this year. Mtb is a hell of a lot more physically demanding over shorter distances.

Also think off road takes more core and upper body as you are having to balance and alter the direction of the bike more - your upper body is fairly relaxed on road .... Personally I'm just not fit enough to get an MTb up or down some of those slopes- it's much higher impact as you say

You can smash a 50 easy on a road bike if you pick the right terrain. If you try a 50 where I live on a mtb it will ruin you! Mind if I turn the wrong way and head up some huge grovels on the road bike that can ruin you very fast as well! My road bikes gearing is not made for climbing, well it does not feel like it is any way!

I can bike the 14 mile to work and back and think nothing of it. 14 mile on an mtb is a proper work out.
Doug doing 30 in a day offroad is probably equivelant to 150 on a road bike IMHO.

Think my Lejog was 956 miles over 8 days. Wish I had my Garmin then to track it.
I have a photo somewhere of my shitty bike comp when I finished as my 'proof'

I'm thinking about getting a road bike. I'm currently doing long rides every weekend to improve my fitness and lose weight. I've done most of the off road routes around me so I've started doing more road routes, but doing them on my mountain biking is very hard.
I've never ridden a road bike, does it make that much difference?

Yeah if I was doing it again I would have the 810.
I currently have a edge 500 which is brilliant for general riding.

its much easier on road and geared better to suit. Although really if you want to lose weigh using off road sticky tyres on the road is making you work a lot harder.

Yeh that's a good point. I might stick with the MTB for a while.

My bro in law is looking for a bike to commute about 4 miles each way to work.
I love my boardman and recommended the hybrid comp to him,
But if you had £300-£400 to spend on a hybrid what would you suggest to him? Its mainly level ground, no major inclines etc.

I'm hoping it should be a big comfort improvement compared to taking my Nike backpack with 4 water bottles in
