nevr seen that with the water pump before. mine all came from autovaux for the last decade so not convinced its a shit design, just you got a bad one perhaps.

id rebuild it. engines arent worth much in bits, corsas arent worth much without and engine.

What does a rebuild consist of though Nic? Something else has failed interanly causing the tapping noise. When the water pump failed it damaged the timing belt but it didn't snap so snother fault has happened inside the engine causing it to tap its tits off.

Oil pressure light never came on and there was no metal filings in the oil. Would I need to get the cylinders bored, crank re ground etc?

get crank checked, if there is scores in the bore try a hone, if not a re-bore which will mean new pistons of a larger size. bearings and gaskets etc isnt all that expensive, and theyre a very simple engine to build really.

if youre not confident by looking yourself, drop the block and crank at a engine builder place should tell you if theyre alright free of charge tbh.

Your worrying just how I was mate. Thinking how much it'll all cost etc to have it all redone.

If I was you i'd get a bare block/head for cheap and swap everything over. Then just buy new belt/pump again.

Yea Astra is the replacement, 100% getting broke Fed up of fixing it, problem after problem for something that isn't worth it tbh. Its only a XE, if it was a LET then yea but not for a XE. I don't see the point of putting so much money into it as I found it to be over hyped tbh. Not as quick or as fun as everyone makes them out to be.

Everything is available except for the engine as thats sold already, wheels are now on my Astra so there not available either but everything else is up for grabs.
