What are they like on diesel? Are they reliable? Do they rot badly?

Pretty sure the shells are all aluminium, and the chassis are galvanised steel, or could just be painted. Think there easy enough to pick up anyway  .

they can rot if not taken care of but then all you do is unbolt that panel and replace
also 90's leak round the door. make sure it's the 200tdi not the old 2.5 TD. big difference. you may find getting a discovery cheaper

A Mercedes 300 TE diesel auto with towbar. About a 93 - 95 model will do the trick better than anything else and should come in at under your budget. They're lovely old cars, smooth as silk, bomb proof and better built than any new/recent Mercedes, or anything else for the money for that matter.

Also bear in mind that regular towing beats the sh*t out of the tow car so your average car won't put up with it for long without falling to pieces. Hence the German engineering being ideal.
Pajeros/Shoguns tend to break back axle casings just pulling their own weight and anything French, Italian or swedish will come apart quicker than a Leper in a Mortar attack as soon as you try and use it as a work horse.
Range Rover and Land Rover are considerations but are not as refined or stable for towing or normal road use. The V8s are too juicy and the diesels are gutless and agricultural.
You don't want to tow with anything FWD or manual, and you only need 4WD to get stuff out of muddy fields or up steep icy hills.
So, if it's tarmac, go for an E class, and if it's muddy, spend a bit more and get an old G Wagon.
You'll never regret it 
Alternatively, if you fancy an old banger and are not bothered about juice, go for an old 4x4 Sierra or a Granada MK II injection or Granada Scorpio.

we used to tow our old caravan with a volvo 480 Looked well weird with it being so low.
