The mercedes was due to a fuck up in aerodynamics, I remember watching it love on eurosport, I was blown away. The was in the first few laps of the race. They had another car crash similiarly in a less dramatic way in practise and since were under the impression they sorted the problem. Naturally they withdrew!

Just read in my Gilles Villeneurve book that he was hurled from the car and crashed straight into the fencing. Imagine being on the other side of the fence at the time, sick.

Over an hour long!! all crashes!
Maybe we're going a tad off topic by just posting crashes, but some of those look nasty

He knew nothing about it actually Joe if I remember correctly.
The G force the car pulled when the nose came up was enough to make him black out and he remembered nothing of the incident apart from the car getting light and then coming around in the trees next to the course surrounded by emergency crews.
Such a waste of such a pretty car.

Barely post-war Dave, I suppose they were used to scenes like this then.
Looks like the bloody Somme doesn't it.

Good find Pete.
Forgot about this thread.
It's grim, but those who lost their lives should be remembered when ever possible.

Sorry to bump this thread. I was chatting to my dad just now about past motor racing deaths and wanted to show him the vids in the first page of this thread but they've been deleted
I did manage to find this one: WW - viewer discretion is advised http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biSbSRp4A2o&feature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5UY011yxOI
It really saddens me that these people died doing what is in essence their job, racing. Some are so tragic.
We also lost a Drag Racer last year: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Kalitta horrific story too.
Makes you think...
