here it says adding both sides of the tyre and nothing to do with the bit in the middle also i cannot see any referece in the formula to a 45 profile tyre, forgive me if i am wrong

hang on are we talking here how far a wheel would travel at one engine RPM or one wheel revolution??

Just to confuse everyone a little more i'm going to include Gear ratio's

My tyres are 205/40/17's,

Hence the circumference is Pi * Diameter

The Diameter is;
17"> mm = 17*25.4 = 431.8mm
+ Sidewall Depth = 205*40%* 2 (Top and bottom side walls) = 164mm
164 + 431.8 = 595.8mm

Hence Circumferance = Pi * 595.8mm = 1871.8mm = 1.87m

Hence, If you travelled 1km, 1000/1.87 = 534 revolutions

Presuming I did the 1km @ a constant 60km/hr(for ease and save me ahving to convert into miles . 60km=37.5mph), that'd mean it will take me 60 seconds to do, hence the wheels are doing 534rpm.

Presuming the final Drive is 3:1, and I was in fourth gear (1:1), the car would be doing a constant 1602rpm, which sounds about right.

16 x 25.4 = 406mm (wheel diameter in mm)
195 divided by 100, times 80 (profile times 2) = 156mm or 175.5 for a 45 profile.

add the 2 together, and you get the overall diameter of the wheel + tyre.

562mm for a 195/40 16
581.8mm for 194/45 16

times that by pi for the circumference IIRC?

1765.242mm for the 40 profile
1827.434mm for 45 profile

soooo, a miles is 1,609,344mm

That makes 911.68 revolutions for the 40 and 880.65 for the 45

like i say i'm doing a project on power transmission atm so it literally rolls off the fingers (dodgy grammer an all ).

From those figures though, they're a little out for my car, as it does 40mph in fourth at a little over 2krpm, hence if i re-jigged the calculation above, i can work out that my final drive is 3.745:1, in case anyone wanted to know .

Actually, if it were a two stroke engine it would be, but for a 4 stroke, it's half the number
