TEENAGER Joshua Lockett gave his brother's details when stopped by police for using a mobile phone while at the wheel.

The 19-year-old, of King William Street, Tunstall, was already disqualified from driving when he was stopped on March 2 last year and gave the name of his brother John.

Prosecutor Paul Spratt told Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court the lie would not have come to light had the real John Lockett not been stopped by police in Liverpool in October.

After the defendant had given his details in March, John Lockett was on the police records as being banned from driving for six months.

Joshua Lockett was later identified as the real culprit by one of the officers who originally stopped him.

He pleaded guilty to intending to pervert the course of justice, as well as driving while disqualified and without insurance.

Jason Holt, mitigating, said Lockett has now grown up and wants to put his offending behind him.

Judge Robert Trevor-Jones sentenced Lockett to eight months' detention in a young offenders' institution, suspended for two years, with 200 hours unpaid work.

He was also banned from driving for a year.
