Diesels are far from boring and these days aren't slow at all.

Diesels are for people who like lazy cars IMO.
Petrolheads are not adversed to revving an engine.

IMO they are, you are just saying that because you own a Diesel now, but you know you're VXR was MUCH more fun than your car (admittedly they are completely different cars but still)
I'm not saying I wouldn't have a Diesel, but I'm saying they are boring and the only people saying petrols are better own petrol cars and people who own Diesels say Diesels are better

you could say that about any turbo engine
A derv engine is not lazy because it revs 1.5k less

On that basis your rad must not handle that well with a big lump up front
you talk shit
i have a shorter wheel base and wider track to compensate

I disagree - it depends on your circumstances and what matters - i.e the mile I do, regardless of how much fun a petrol is to drive, it would soon bore me having to keep filling it with fuel - If i was loaded then then putting loads of fuel in wouldn't be an issue
I think both dervs and petrols have their place. Some petrol engines are shite and so are some dervs
However both can be as entertaining and rewarding to drive so there is no right or wrong other than for the person having to run the car and circumstances
And for all those saying they can get high MPG from petrols that is when they are driving like grannys which surely defeats your argument of saying petrols are more entertaining to drive

but your comment about heavier engine meaning poor handling is bollocks. Rado's dont even handle that well so a well balanced derv would be better than anyway

The diesel is pretty much linear, like a straight line, like the only way they should point.

so can a derv be fun just becaus eit revs 1.5k lower doesnt mean it less fun
My TT used to tail off after 5.5k and my derv is about 4k so 1.5k is not that much difference really

I had a DERV before the VXR too, and can see the benefits of both.
I couldn't justify a VXR now because at 23mpg av it would cost an arm and leg with me driving around for my current job.
I miss it when i get on a nice stretch of road, but for long journeys I love the Audi for quality, comfort and mpg.
I also enjoy trying to drive the big diesel quick on twisties too. More of a challenge.
But some of the high performance dervs are silly quick these days. 220bhp and enough torque to crease tarmac.

When I tap my 1.9JTD's pedal it feels like I'm floating on a cloud
When I tap my 1.8T's pedal it feel like I'm the lightning, from said cloud, killing people in my way

The Mazda 6 2.2 DIESEL Sport I have was, and still is, their top of the range offering for that model...
It's a 2.2 TDi with a factory output of 185PS - Their highest output petrol is a 2.5 with 170PS.
They look identical, apart from the Diesel has an Intercooler in one of the bumper side vents, and they both come with the same heavily loaded standard-fit Equipment list.
Similarly, the Octavia vRS - yes, the Petrol in this case is more powerful etc, but to look at and equipment wise, the TDi version is identical. With the same options list... And again with the current Leon FR.
I agree that some manufacturers are cottening onto the fact that people want the performance/looks of a high end petrol with the economy of the diesel engine, Seat Leon FR is an example of this, same as the BMW 1 Series M-Sport. One has a nasty interior and the other is too expensive.
[Edited on 07-04-2011 by A2H GO]
most car manufactuerers offer the car in derv and petrol for the sam etrim
MSPORT is available in both
Sline in both
Benz sport in both
Vauxhall SRI in both
the list goes on
The fact is most days you cant tell the difference between a petrol and a derv if it is not labelled on the boot
My point wasn't that a petrol equivilent of the diesel is offered, it was more the fact that not all manufacturers offer a diesel equivilent of the top spec petrol.
Yes you can get a diesel A3,Golf,Astra but none of them look as good exterior/interior wise as the VXR, GTi, Audi S/RS versions.
Ie. If Vaux put the 1.9 CDTi engine in a VXR and called it a VXD id buy it. Same goes for VW and Audi, they won't though as it detracts from the 'performance' nature of the petrol.

Thats the trouble with people in turbo cars, they think they are going much faster than they are, really they are just on and off the boost because it feels like a novelty
didn't realise the TT's weren't faster than a corrado

how come ferrari, lambo etc don't make diesel sports cars?
Audi, Bmw etc are all doing them to cater for those who don't care for driving too much, if one of these people walked into ferrari and asked if they did the enzo in a diesel i reckon they would get laughed away

Ill try and simplify this as much as possible.
The majority of top spec cars offered are petrol. In most cases if you want a diesel, you have to sacrifice looks and spec for economy.

Physics disagrees if you replace the engine any car with a heavier one it will always handle worse.
and the Corrado was one of the best handling fwd cars of the early 90s.
