Erm, sort of I'd like to see them in shops one day so I need to spend a few more quid on development and tooling

All they've got is their automatic copyright, I don't think my product is a copy of theirs so they would be foolish to take it to court. My design is soon to become registered, the search didn't show up anything similar which would cause issue in getting the registration in the UK. The idea isn't really patentable because it's not novel, you'd be patenting some obscure part of it just to get it. Had a few in depth conversations about it all with my patent attorney friend

Sounds good - I assumed you had considered it. I think you have a real shot at making it a success, it looks awesome and is so much cheaper.

There's a handful of people selling these and kits, so you couldn't patent it on design alone. As Ed said, it would have to be something unique to his model/version. Only issue i can see is the use of the PCB design, as from what i remember it's from the Aussie bloke that sells units/kits.
But no doubt Ed is already sorted if he's spoken to someone about it.
Ed - Ultrasonic or PIR sensor would be a good shout although it might be worth shutting down circuitry (Atmega/drivers + LEDs) rather than just using it control brightness to conserve power. The Atmega has built in power saving modes that would be ideal (power usage drops to around 400uA from what i remember), obviously just keep power on the RTC.
Looks good though

like everything, besides the original one's spacing on the "i t ' s" part
would look better as "i t' s"

Cheers James
Dom, I've made an agreement with the guy who designed the original circuit my product is derived from and of course the instructable that sparked the idea. It's still Arduino based (using the Arduino IDE to burn the code using an AVR ICSP so no bootloader) so I'd have to move over to the Atmel studio to make full use of the extra stuff the IC can do. No biggie, but I think I'd hire someone to help me if I were to go battery powered as it's a little out of my remit.
Cheers M2RTY, the text spacing on the original is a little weird because it's justified. I'm not sure which style I prefer, they both have their design advantages

Is the little eight inbetween three and two just a reflection on your phone?

Are you reflowing the boards yourself ed or getting it done outside?

Hand soldered with an iron and some tweezers for now
The logic board still uses through-hole components though - strangely I find them slower to solder though. This situation somewhat limits output, but I know of a few places who could send the whole lot assembled.

Depends on what you mean by custom text? The answer is probably close zero though because it messes the backlight, the lightbox partitions and the fascia. It would have to be totally bespoke which would cost...

If it was kept in the same constraints as the text is now, would that be a big deal?
