Any noticeable problems running XBMC?
Have you managed to get xvid and other non-hardware accelerated formats to play ok?
Does opening a menu whilst playing a video cause stuttering? (seems to be a common problem, although some people are saying clocking the ARM to 800/900-950 helps a lot).

Read quite a few reports of it not being great in XBMC. Good if all you want to do is play exactly the right format video but throw in a few older, a few different ones and its struggles.
Also the interface can get boggy when you start adding lots of plugins

Video quality is brilliant, but the interface is CLUNKY!

And yeah accessing the menus with media playing is a waste of time.

Trying to play a 1080p x264 killer elite and it's not liking it.
Trying to do anything else while that's playing, like get out of it, is really slow.

Not doing too well with the 720p file I'm trying either, says x264 in the filename, maybe it just doesn't like that encoding, that's what most of my stuff seems to be

So essentially, it's shit as a media player?
Still interesting in hearing if it's any better once overclocked....

I think it's an old build I'm using as well, I'll persevere and update when I've got anything to report.
Looking at updating and overclocking just now.
Is it the openelec or raspbmc you've been reading about.
It's openelec I'm using, not tried the other one yet.

Have been reading about both, although i've read that Raspbmc is apparently the bloaty of the two; saying that Raspbmc RC3 was released last night it is apparently a lot better.
There's a good wiki page on elinux.org that outlines the overclocking and config file. And it looks like 900/950 CPU, 500 SDRAM is easily achievable and is suppose to smooth a lot of the lagging/stuttering issues with XBMC.
However it looks like the general consensus is that the RPi isn't as good as a media player as people originally thought it would be

You've still got to remember both software are still in alpha or beta stages (raspbmc and openelec xbmc). At the same time most people have only had their rPi's for a month or two which doesn't give much time for developing stable software - I imagine in a good few months the software will be much much better.
If XBMC is occupying so much CPU and RAM, hopefully, someone will make a build of just a simple media player that can play files from a directory viewer - that's essentially all that is needed.

Might be micro but still $400, if you don't need something THAT small you might as well get a low power CPU capable of VDPAU that Intel or AMD offer.

at $400 it's a bit steep to just be used as a Smart TV box

They are expensive, however you can do more then just use them as a Smart TV alternative. If that's all you're after then this is perfect: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/zotac-ionitx-p-e-nvidia-ion-intel-celeron-su2300-(12ghz)-ddr3-sata-ii-3gb-s-raid-sata-pcie-(x16)-min
Being Mini-ITX there's plenty of amazing cases out there and it's almost £100 cheaper (if we were to get the Intel one you posted above for the $400 equivalent in GBP). It has HDMI, USB, WiFi, etc. The Atom chip can decode HD video perfect (even the killer 1080p test clips) and still only use up to around 15% CPU. Uses less power than a lightbulb and uses next to nothing in S1-3 hibernation or sleep

Why would you want OSX for a smart TV box?
I'd either just get a new or wait until I needed a new TV before spending hundreds of pounds on a media player.

Yup; seems to be a lot of money for something that you could do for half the price using mini-ATX boards. Plus decent mini PCIe tuners are hard to come by, so unless you used USB adaptors it'd rule out using it as a decent HTPC.

Just got back to find my Grandad dropped his rPi, a 2GB SD and a 4GB SD card last night. Using a Samsung Micro-USB charger for the power and a USB wireless keyboard and mouse.
Booted in about 3 minutes (first boot takes a bit longer as it needs to configure everything).
That's the 2GB pre-installed OS that came with the RS order. Going to try Openelec (if I can find Windows install instructions) and Raspbmc now.

Cheers Davey, managed to scour their forum to find a 4GB image, just writing it to the SD card now, slowly.
EDIT: This was the image; OpenELEC-RPi_20120626_r11410_4GB_SDCARD
