You can get them for that budget. I'd be putting that top of the list tbh or keep looking for an ek9, they do come up cheaper sometimes. E36 m3 (evo though) would be my choice but not ideal for a girl.

Ek9 on ebay for 4.5k. Has evo front seats, no service history and a few marks on the bodywork.
I cant see a better ek9 going for 4.5k tbh.

Civic is a safe choice, but what about an Accord Type-R? Getting pretty cheap now and they are a crackin car tbh.
Or - the old skool suggestion - Mk2 Golf GTi

I wouldn't buy a bottom end EK9, I'd want a decent one.

Don't know really they're a bit big with heavy clutches but I don't mean to be sexist lol

Out of the pair of us, she's the one who had the most powerful car!
Having owned a 350z, which had the heaviest clutch known to mankind, she'd probably manage.
Re imprezas, the ones I've driven were bug/blob/hawkeye models, never driven a classic so I won't rule it out completely!

My only driving experience is from my Blob STI, but I've read lots of comments from WRX owners who swear they get a more comfortable and road "usable" car than an STI can offer. It's mainly suspension and longer gears from the 5speed box I think, but apparently it's a substantially different car even when modded and mapped to the same power.
Just thought I'd thrown that in there, if you've driven STI's before - maybe a WRX is worth trying out or vice versa.
EDIT: Your budget will get you a stunning classic, but I'm not sure how good they are considering the age/mileage you're likely to be buying.
