I work as a Technician for an Audi dealer..
It has its ups and its downs, but its certainly something i dont intend on doing past the age of 35. The moneys not great for what has become a job that requires a great deal of skill and knowledge. The role in the past year has become heavilly focused on customer service and 'return to workshop' ie, if a car comes in, its not expected to come back in for any reason in the near future. Thats for any reason, including a car being booked in for an issue, diagnosing it for X part and getting it sorted that day - takes alot of pre planning to speculativly order parts etc or provide the customer with a car so we can keep theirs if the parts not in stock.. plus all the other reasons a car may come back (preventing shit workmanship etc)
Its long.. jobs can become rather annoying, especially the bizzare problems that make no sense and have you going round in circles, leaves you hating the job
I tend to be given the bigger stuff and stuff they dont want going wrong.. ie i have an R8 on my ramp in pieces awaiting a clutch for the Rtronic at the moment.. but its the stuff i enjoy stuff like that, and engine / gearbox rebuilds.
To be honest, we dont seem to see many youngsters comming through for apprenticships and are struggling to find decent techs to work to the standard required these days (could be the pay and hours tbh)
I feel into the trap of liking cars, then deciding to make a career of it!
Some random work pics...
R8 engine replacement / investigation

02 plate S8 Various crap - was quicker to remove the engine to do all the work

A3 engine replacement after timing chain tensioner failure.... fun xmas...

Another R8 - manual clutch replacement

A5 cab - bottom end rebuild with modified pistons and rods - excessive oil consumption..

My girlfriends cousin graduated from an architectural technician degree recently and he's struggled badly to get a job in that field (applied all over the country, done free work for local people etc). Seems a difficult industry to get into.

Air emissions testing. Basically testing the crap coming out of massive chimneys
You could do MOT's on Impreza's with that skillset
On a serious note, ever done power stations? We spend millions trying to reduce the nasty stuff that comes out of our chimney.
Aye, ferrybridge, cockenzie, few others.
Old coal fired stations are always dirty, will always get high pm results. Depends what you are getting high results in though, alot comes down to temperatures and can be as simple as the coal itself.
If you have bag filters, the coal can be milled to finley and actually cut the bag filters. Precips are good, aslong as looked after.

Aye it's a fascinating topic tbh
I work at Drax, currently looking at converting to Biomass so we're taking it pretty seriously. Trialled all sorts of coals though over the years and spent a fair whack on an FGD project some years ago.

I can imagine. Biomass, woodchip?
We've moved into a new sector too, bioaerosols, theres a new market, companies getting green waste, food waste, meat waste, heating it and composting it over a short time. But this can create some nasties, living bacterial emissions, its pretty crazy how its done, basically keeping everything sanitised, take a sample over 30mins, collect it then keep it at a low enough temp to stop it breeding, but not low enough to kill it.
Drax rings a bell, i think we may have do e something in the past? Possibly on the Environment Agency contract?
