What is it about a cav turbo that makes you think it will be particularly fun and desirable, have you driven one recently? I reckon youd be bored of it in a week

Its got Turbo innit, and its cheap.
Am sure you end up with some other random pretty shitty half dodgy suspect car again. Like an Audi RS with the wrong wheels and brakes on it and half the boot floor missing.

The problem is, cars that were awesome when you were younger, no longer are. I would strongly advise you see if you can have a go in one, even if its just a gsi 2000. You will be shocked at how poor they feel when youre used to newer stuff

I think you would be mad to buy a Cavalier tbh. You don't seem to hang on to cars for long. It's not going to be a bad car, but compared to the cars you've had in the past, it's going to disappoint.
A Cavalier Turbo is something to have and keep for years and appreciate.
You'll buy it, get bored, then struggle to shift it on.

Let it remain a memory, the reality will be SERIOUSLY disappointing.

I noticed you said you would love an RX7 but worried about it blowing up .... this is not actually a bad thing as a brand new engine can be had from Mazda for not a lot of money. I would look for one that has blown up and pick it up for peanuts then drop a new lump in it.
I know an RX7 specialist that could help if you want ... call Jon from Minotaur Racing http://minotaurracing.co.uk/

I don't see why he wouldn't like an old car? I'd much rather drive and own an older car. Much more character and the 'cool' factor and the added bonus of not losing money on them (usually). My m3 is 21 years old and would have it over a newer BM any day.
Although I would be choosing a 325 sport over a cav any day, but if it's a car that he's always wanted to own then may as well give it a go.

The rx7 also worries me as i doubt a car seat would go in the back

Nothing wrong with cav turbo"s comparing a car that's nearly 20 years old the new ones going to be better. As someone said you but something like a cav to appreciate it. Also if it's been looked after it will be fine examples that have been ragged will be poor.
