ben - out of interest what shift allowance do you get

Serious question as my engineers work shifts are we standardizing t&C's at present

2 shift - flat money on days, 33% on nights (this is what I started on for a few months).
3 shift - 27% across all shifts. Been on this since October 2007.

I suppose it depends where you live!

There's one in a reasonably nice part of Wokingham and the car park is full of what can only be described as 'middle class school run cars' and the store is full of Champagne Charlies'

Not really mate. I'm in quite a unique position where by i don't have a fixed job in my area so i'm mostly offline doing engine repairs but will cover guys who are off.

No different to working in an office typing on a computer all day, or a bus driver doing his round.

I know what you mean though. Some guys have one fixed job and don't really talk to anyone. I work with a great group of young guys who all love a bit of banter. Makes the time fly.

I've got some friends who work at JLR, one of them is involved with production and he told me there's an old guy in the Castle Brom plant who fits brake pedals (or something like that). Apparently he's been doing it for something like 30 years, standing in the same spot - the only thing that's changed are the cars which go down the line.

That's why we all get excited when one of us smashes a hole in a sump proper facepalm moment, followed by a mad rush to stem the flow of 5 litres of oil pissing out

Sad times if the highlight of the day is to save 5 litres of oil pissing out a sump

Fuck off I got decent grades and went to college. Couple of guys here with uni degree's also. It's just a case of getting in at the right time.

It was this or PCSO. Looking back, I believe I made the right choice.

Agree a lot around career progression is right place at the right time and your ability to network goes a lot further than grades and uni

Apart fro my first job after uni I have rarely referenced my degree in engineering

I'm entirely self taught in my profession, doing far better now than when I was working in my field of study.

I'm doing better now than I was in my field of study too - however, that job helped me to get to this one (to a point).
