Need some more opinions, as I'm a geeky engineer I love Reynolds steel frames. I was planning on getting one of these for the road:

But my non-connoisseur friends are telling me to get this:

My reasons for the steel are comfort and durability. I'm going to be buzzing about local A and B roads in preparation for the big 850 mile ride. As far as I see it, the minimal weight penalty will slow down acceleration but as I'm never going to race it I can't see this being a problem.

Steel is real, not sure if on-one and charge do a good quality steel tube set like the genesis bikes.
If you want to build a lighter steel road bike they are bringing out a 853 Reynolds frame and fork set.

They already do the Equilibrium frameset in 853 - the new one is going to be 953 but I'm guessing it's going to cost as much/more than the titanium version due to the material and production costs of it. They've done a few interesting blog posts on their site about it if you're into that sort of thing.

After he dropped his car off for a service he said it wasn't too bad.
Think we was riding by about 11am - was cool.
He got quite a bit of footage with the GoPro. Will link it up when it's on YouTube.

anyone here ever done/considered doing a bike maintenance course? or do you just learn from the likes of youtube/doing it yourself?
Im not very hands on and don't really trust myself to service my bike properly/fix things that may come up (like my sticking brake/chain catching the guard), so I have been thinking of doing a course although unsure how worth it'll be.

My training I had was working in a bike shop when I was 15 as a Saturday job
But that is what I use my LBS for if it is anything complicated. Normally don't get charged labour as we use them so much.

As much as possible I try and do things myself, only turn to a shop for things such as re-spoking a wheel or where the cost of a particular tool makes it cheaper to get them to do it. I think it's much more satisfying doing it yourself and it also makes you much more aware of how your bike should be setup and run. In Oxford we have a place open at the weekends which is an 'Open Workshop' where you pay a few quid and have access to a load of tools and a few mechanics kicking about, pretty good resource if there is anything similar near you.
I keep searching ebay for folding bikes. In my mind my occasional London journey justify it Had a max bid on one of £62 and it went for £65 grrr

I have had my bike down to single components and built it back up, there not very complicated but as Simon said a lot of the time it comes down to having the right tools. I have borrowed most of the specialist ones off friends when I have needed them.

The 853 frame set came out this month.
New one is going to be £2000 + with it being stainless 953. They may be doing a limited run of the full build 953 also.
Also its not an equilibrium 953 is a Volare, there first race frame so much much different geometry to the equilibrium.

Not saying its a bad frame, just saying its not the same kind of quality as a Reynolds 725 frame.

Managed about 11 miles on a trail at mabie forest near dumfries this evening. Its quite good in places and enjoyed the late evening ride out. Was just getting dark as we got finished.
Hopefully get out again tomorrow afternoon somehwere on the mountain bike. Dunno if its all the running I've been doing lately but my legs were dead afterwards. First time I've ever struggled.

Sorry to anyone that has me on facebook and keeps seeing this but
in 6days I will be on my 110mile bike ride (furthest to date is 50miles) followed by a 10mile run at some ungodly hour(3.45am) on Thursday morning... Why am I doing this? To raise money for an amazing charity(dougie Mac) https://www.justgiving.com/Matthew-Lindop/ of anyone wants to donate it would be greatly appreciated.
