My guess is that the owners of the site are guarding it to prevent squatters, who could pose a problem if the planning application is accepted and they want to start developing the site.
The alternative is that the site may be contaminated - although I would have thought it would be better secured - it looks as if there has been a fire there, in a building of it's age, there could be exposed asbestos materials there? Or there could be something radioactive on the site...?

Probably nothing but in this pic how come at the top left it shows like some trees and sky like a reflection but you are looking into a corridor.

Good point, but would the proposed developers really be bothered to fork out security for 9 years?? This would cost big £. IMO a contamination is unlikely as this would have been cleared up by now surely? Something weird has happened there i think, due to the fact that it is so hard to try and find information on why the place closed.

this is our local haunted place, well actually we drove fooking miles to get there but it did shit us up loads - especially when we were all running about in the dark and some woman from the village came out and started shouting at us - lol
oh and also our local pub, the white heart - in chelmsford, is on some haunted house thing although the only weird thing i have ever seen in there is arsenal loose a match - it was a LONG time ago tho.

True, it would be interesting to know why it's being guarded.
House of Commons reports state that the hospital was earmarked for closure in the early '90s along with several other mental hospitals. I also found reference to the planning decision in 1999 which was taken by the Sec. of state for the environment, denying permission to develop the site. There is no other reference as to why the permission was rejected. Easiest way to find out is to contact the MP responsible directly and ask them openly why the planning permission was denied.

security will be there to stop squaters/vandals - the same was in place at the mental home near where i used to live which subsequently was turned into the Ford Rally head quarters..
Theres also a crematorium on the site and its a listed building which are two reasons people will struggle to get planning permission

If there was a crematorium I think you have to wait so many years (75??) after last body was cremated before building can be used again. This is why Marischal College in Aberdeen has only got certain bits being turned into office space - it used to be where med students done autopsys etc (way back) and they disposed of the bodies on site.
