back from laaaandaaaan
well it may be like im pointing the finger but im just really pissed off at the whole scenario.
No offence dave, but my car was fine apart from lacking power before i brought it to you, and since its gone to you its been off the road for 5+ months.
I just dont understand how a car can fuck up just like that.
I paid dave before to remove and re-install the engine, which had sensors wired up wrongly, so something simple like that can only put in my mind csomething else can be wrong, and as i've already said the bellhousing bolts/cam cap bolts etc etc etc puts further worry's into my head.
As for the running in, shouldnt a new engine be STRONGER than the old and not fook up all of a sudden.

The run-in period is where most engine damage/failures occurs if its not done right.

4/5k is fine - as i had a conversation with dave before i left and he stated to me its fine for up to 5k, after then damage can be done.
and as i see - i said 4k or so - which means some more aswell Twiggy

was it not run in on the dyno?high revving is bad for a rebuilt engine but overloading is worse.

it was run in for half an hour on the dyno which i thought was weird, was also labouring low down in fourth on the dyno but nothing serious.
The drive back i didnt take it over 4.5k with only half throttle.

What made you take the rocker cover off to check the camcap bolts were tight? Just out of interest!

after ringing dave we took off the cam cover to check timing marks, and noticed rocker cover allen bolts were loose, so we thought fook it why not have a gander, then my mate bailey (mechanic) just had a peer see if anything was loose to make the noise leant forward and brushed a bolt that was finger-loose.
edit - btw we havnt changed a thing before you ask so that warranty etc isn't void.

Bollocks to running in, if a engine is built right to correct tollerances then there is no reason for it to need running in. All that is needed is a few miles (say 50) on shit mineral oilbut still revining it.

Has a barn in the dales so the Nova's off to be rebuil by me and him over the course of a couple of months as were taking it apart completely for track spec.
Watch this space. Updates of the moving on thursday will be posted in picture form

well we thought why not
We're finding out the damage thursday night, but the piston we thought might be buggared is ok, so the direction now is Big end bearings or somewhere along those lines.

started work friday night and we've now taken off the head/cams out/lifters etc etc.
Cam timing was spot on and all well
Found a bit of a shocker though. The middle 2 headbolts weren't torqued, and 2 centre cam caps weren't tight either (will get the precise numbers later)
We think this has caused the head to flex allowing more movement.
2 piston has a dirty great big chunk out of it, 1 and 3 are badly mangled/pitted, and 4's started to pit.
The head needs replacing , but the valveds are all ok.
Surprisingly the bore's also fine so the bottom end hopefully will hold up.
I've got plenty of pics but will post up later on.
So far we need full new pistons, new head skimmed and polished and seals, with a thinner headgasket to match the compression of what it was with a head skimmed 2/3 times overall.

found also a foreign body of metal has been left loose in the inlet side of the engine, as softer metal has mated itself to the head on the number 3 valves, but nothing has broken off anywhere else on the head to be able to get to there....
Pics following.

yeh we think it came from cylinder 2 or three and bounced around. we reckon the guides were being bashed due to bad torquing in other places and a multitude of reasons

valve guides break due to wear or piston-valve contact but the fact that the timing was spot on rules that last one out. is the valve from that piston bent at all? any scoring on the shaft of the valve?
if not then its likley to just be down to fatigue over time. Cant see it being a head torque problem, that would show up immediately by way of a poor running engine and lack of compression, oil mixing with water etc...
