As far as I understand it's where the engine protects it self under certain situations to prevent damage to itself.

I had a feeling it would give a nice gain, due to the stupid design of the pipe, it goes mega small diameter in some points. Its just i dont have a RR to hand to actually prove these things,Lol.
Without it, the engine should sound cooler too 
Oh, i would recommend a cold air feed too, i setup a temperature probe in the tb area, and it does get quite hot when moving(due to the rad heating the incoming air, which the tb then sucks in)

So is this having the same effect as something like a mantzel inlet. Or is the origional vaux inlet still more restrictive even with this mod in place?

would this work the same then if you removed the standard pipe an replaced it with like a samco hose?? an left the filter in the normal place??

The inlet is still restrictive, upper section mostly where the air has to bend 90deg to get the runners.
The plastic pipe is a big part of the restriction tho.
You could use samco hose yeah, but its expensive to buy, and might be a bit tight for space. The tb size is 63mm(2 1/2"), so you would need about a meter/1.5m of 63mm hose.

Only X14/16xe engines have that extra "L" shape.
C16xe's and X16XEL's dont have it.

On a corsa, i'd cut a hole through the inner arch liner, and have the pipe inlet under the bumper.
Or straight to the front of the bumper and over the gearbox.
