Wednesday 8th October

Well, another month drifts into view now on this one, and still no hope at the moment.

I have managed to acquire a new coil, that looks more like the one i need. However, following spending a morning re-wiring various elements of the loom (in the rain), im still not having much luck. I dont really know what else to look for, and with a dizzy currently being bidded on through ebay, i can only hope that my problem shows some sort of progress soon. A secondary thought is that the ignition amplifier is hammered, but this is a rare problem.

On a positive, the battery tray and wiring is now ready behind the passenger seat, with just 2 secondary bolts to be secured in place. I also found that, with some modification, a standard corsa decat will indeed fit. I just need to work out if it will be cheaper to just get a piece of standard pipe and have it fitted to shape though.

Still not started it then, and with christmas drawing in and the car getting more and more little bits of damage sitting where it is, i am beginning to run out of patience.

Ah well. Any suggestions welcome!

By any chance have you got a black wire with no use around where the battery tray is or near the water pipe exit on the side of the block battery side? if so put it onto the battery and your problem should be solved. Should have a switched live from the ecu to the battery (Black Wire)

there is no ECU...the carbs are running themselves and the dizzy is vauum advance. so all i should need is the switch live and the negative, i have both, but the coil is giving no output.

Well i am expecting a new dizzy from ebay soon, which should solve the problem. big wait due to paypal sending an e-cheque as payment...so am a bit annoyed.

I reckon the problem lies in the hall sensor within the distributor and so a new one should solve the problem.

Quick update

Well, i finally got my distributor (thursday last week) but it was the wrong one. Slot drive, not the peg type. So, i sent that back and i now finally have the right one. It will be going on over the weekend so i am hoping that it will start.

I have no pictures as my phone has been sent away for repair, sorry!

Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd November

Wahoo!! Well after spending saturday cleaning some stuff up, and Sunday morning with some assistance, i finally got the sweet, sweet sound of it running!

Yes people, it has started and run. So pleased. Still a few bits left to do, but its certainly a huge step.

I found out that this engine needs a few earths, as its reputed for being a badly earthed unit. So it now has no fewer than 4 earths running off onto various parts on the engine bay. Also, still need to route things like the choke and throttle cables, but i've got this week off to sort it all!

So, now just need to get the exhaust section sorted and then its MOT, and tax, then i'm pretty much good to go.

woo!

and, as adam posted earlier, here's the video!

Monday 3rd November

Well, although i have not physically done anything to the car today due to stripping my mum's astra of vital parts before it goes to scrap, there was a big step. I managed to get little bits like the stopper for the throttle cable, and some hoses for the vacuum system, just to help tidy up.

In needing my exhaust done i've spoken to a local body repair place that i know well, and he has collected the car (free of charge) on his flatbed and taken it to his place. I am providing parts tomorrow for him to do it, and it should only take him an hour to sort. So i'm hoping i will be putting an update up this time tomorrow saying the exhaust is all completed.

Until then!

nope, nothing is tapping. due to no exhaust...the gasses spitting out of the manifold sounded that way. i thought it was tapping at first too, but it was just the exhaust.

GIMP.

you start a engine thats been stood for a fair while and expect it to be silent
especially when it states it has no exhaust fitted.

Wed 5th November

Well, after a reasonably busy day, there has been some progress.

Got the car back from the workshop first thing...and the job done is spot on. there is a little piece of flexi to take up any movement and the job looks really good!

Once i got it back, i started on some little jobs. Pulled off the bumper and dropped the oil. Changed the filter too. there was quite a bit of water that had been picked up by the oil. Need to let it circulate again, but i think i'll be doing yet another change shortly.

Then i jacked the back up and threw a load of firegum onto the backbox join. and aligned the tailpipe how i want it. looks good and should seal all the way through now.

However, when i started it, the bottom pulley (for alternator) is twisting as it turns, so i dont think it's on straight. Will sort this tomorrow. Also, the throttle cable still needs sorting.

Until next time...
