A tidy standard E36 is no bad car. I would see them a fairly desirable/classic now. Obviously tatty or modded and that is not the case.

Astra is not a bad choice for the money. That blue one same as mine is now down to £2650 which is no money at all when you consider it wouldn't have been far off 10 times that list with all those options. Mine was £24k roof price and didn't have colour nav.

Doesn't have the snob value of the BMW but I would also have an idea where to get bits for it, BMW less so.

E36 is a lot better car than the Astra due to build quality, proper wheel drive, N/A highly strung engine with 6speed box larger wheel base more refined etc. However Astra is phenomenal VFM. newer car so less likely to rot or need any expensive bits. Know my way around them too as used to own one.

I reckon it will come down to what I can find. None of the astras are in the colour I want. That one posted has had too much replaced and sounds like they want rid as it's going wrong. E36s might all be ready for the scrappy.

Time will tell I guess

astra is good value for money, until you realise you should have gone straight for the M3 and sell it at a loss

This is true. But put it like this. If the Astra looses £2k in 18months as a loss. That a service and some tyres for the bm

I went for the astra VXR because it was newer, low mileage and I always thought something was going to go wrong with my Evo as it was older and its was gonna cost a fookin fortune, turned out I didn't need to fix a thing on the Evo in the year I had it and the astra cost me over £1.5k in repairs in 4 months

The point of that story???

Newer isnt always better
