Whatever they have used between mine and the neighbours house is amazing insulation. They have 2 kids, one is 3 and other 18 months. Never hear a sound. Very well built house imho.

Just don't buy a timber frame built place or somewhere with a party wall about 2 inches thick

I use a E-WT-2 for timber framed party wall, not had any complaints. Comes out about 250mm thick.

Parents house is a 1930's semi. Same thing there and it's all brickwork.

It's because there'll be a direct connection between the houses allowing sound to travel through.
They're quite good now at preventing sound through party walls with robust details, NHBC and the like are usually really strict about it in their inspections too.
No reason why a timber frame would be any less insulated for sound than masonry build, still have the same standards and values to achieve. Unfortunately in construction old habits die hard and we still haven't really got the best out of timber frame buildings which leads to people rightly being a bit wary of them.

Americans build their houses out of wood and they are always getting blown down

They don't even fix them to the ground, just start putting wood on top of the foundations

You probably need to get you ears checked mate. I can hear my little boy crying from the end of the back garden

Keeping his child at the end of the garden while he is inside researching his car collection, terrible behaviour.
