Car massively let me down after a nigh shift on friday morning.

The battery in the keyfob went completely dead. My doorlock hasn't ever worked (it just spins, guessing something holding it has broken, as the barrel itself is fine) and obviously I cant climb in through the boot so had to leave the car and get a lift home.

Was gutted and also angry at myself for not getting the lock sorted

Looking back, I could've manually released the roof from inside the boot, but it was raining quite a lot so wouldn't have been the best idea.

Anyway, my dad said he would try and replaced the battery in the fob. It's supposed to be a 'sealed for life' unit, probably so when it dies the dealers makes some more money, but you can buy the battery for a fiver and cut the fob open using a stanley blade, so thats what he did.

Nice cheap fix, although I don't think sorting that doorlock out will be quite so cheap

If barrel is OK then the lock is not expensive. If it's anything like E39 space wise then you need tiny hands to replace it.

On my previous E39 I replaced the battery in the key fob and it worked for about a week. Ended up ordering new key for £140. Also don't think you will be able to open the car with fob until you recode it.

Oh right, cheers for that. Fortunately the spare works fine so it's not too much of an issue for now.

Shall have a look into the re-coding. Hoping it'll be ok rather than having to shell out for a whole new key.

With regards to the lock, we removed it before to fix it in place as it had pushed right in. Iirc I once used it and heard something drop, maybe a bit of plastic? Guessing a bracket of some sort which holds it in place while turning the key in it has broken off.

Was a right p.i.t.a removing it last time, so may leace the job until it goes in for a service.

Coding is easy. i am pretty sure I used same process in the E36 and E39

1) Get in and close all doors.

2) Turn on the ignition and turn off quickly. (No more than 5 seconds) to start the process. Next action must take place within 30 seconds.

3) Remove the 1st key.

4) Hold the key up near your left shoulder (this is so it is closer to the remote receiver antenna.

5) Hold down the unlock button and press the lock button 3 times. Release the unlock button and the doors lock which confirms the operation.

6) Quickly repeat steps 4 & 5 for key #2 etc

Cheers I thought by re-coding you meant it needed to be taken to a dealer/specialist.

Finally sorted my fucked heatshield today. It's been scraping on every speedbump and rattles when the cars idling. It's already been repaired once when it detached whilst going through a puddle.

Jacked the car up and quickly realised it's beyond repair (twisted and broken). It's one of 2 that I can see covering the centre section so straightened it out, then tucked one edge underneath the other and done the nut back up. Seems to hold for now and no scraping yet.

Lowered cars are a pain in the arse

I've had to piss around with my rear heatshield a few times without being low!
Went through some deep standing water the other day at some fair speed on the motorway. Hope I haven't done anything underneath actually

Cheers

Gav, should be fine I imagine, it's just a nut holding the heatshields on. They're pretty flimsy.

Yeah I've had to add a big washer to the rear shield because it's fallen apart around the nut

FFS buy a duracell battery not an ebay one otherwise you'll end up ripping the roof off in a fit of rage two weeks later

Duracell

The one in the key at the moment is a panasonic VL2020, which is what I searched on ebay.

I was just wondering whether they're genuine or genuine fakes on ebay.

You can get the Key Batteries from most motor factors etc.
Could you not pick one up rather than ordering from eBay and waiting for it to turn up?

More than likely, but I still have an RCL keyfob to use so it's no big deal. They'll be here tomorrow.

They do. The battery most likely hasn't been changed before though and I guess like most batteries, after a certain number of charges they die off.

What are those 5 spoke rims that come on the E90 3 series? Think they're 19" x 9" or something? Anyway, I saw a Z4 coupe on those yesterday and it looked stunning
