That's been coming for a while, even the non geeks will get bored of Apple unless they do something innovative for a change.

Nerds want an open os and innovative features from a phone, the majority of people just want to check Facebook, play the latest game and take photos.
Non-geeks get bored too. Especially when after 2 years they get their shiny new upgrade they have to pay over the odd's for another two years and it's exactly the same as the last one.

There's a lot of noise on Twitter at the moment about the closed-ness of iOS and long term Apple users moving to Android. People are getting bored.
Pod2G got #wewantanopeniOS trending in a matter of hours.
Unless iOS 7 is a full refresh and the 5S is massively innovative I can see them loosing a lot more customers to android devices.

The main thing that will hurt Apple in my opinion is price. When the masses realise that a Nexus 4 type phone does everything they want at a much lower price then Apple are in trouble. Similar to how Samsung and LG have eaten into the TV market at the expense of traditional big names like Sony/Panasonic/Philips.
Looking at current sales figures though that seems a long way off yet.

This pretty much sums up what I'm trying to say (and is a good read if you're on the verge of switching):

Non-nerds want the same thing they're used to, nothing else. If that's apple products they'll want to stay with that. My mate has a touch and wants an iPhone now because he knows how to use apple stuff, I'd imagine most normal people are the same

And how's it any different to someone upgrading from one android device to another?

Both Android and the hardware that runs it has improved, innovated and moved on dramatically over the last two years.
iPhone is still the same old iPhone.

I quite like iOS and the logic behind things in it (plus I've learnt quite a bit of Objective C now for writing my own apps ).
I don't think I could ever move back to Android. It would be like SetH trying to convince himself that he likes skinny birds more than fat birds.

Pretty much, the minor differences not worth an £800-900 contract. I regretted it within 2 weeks (and there was no one more excited than the biggest Apple fanboy on CS )

Can't see it happening. Apple have never really been big on change for the sake of change.
They'll continue to tweak iOS slowly, one feature at a time.
Using my old 1. gen iPhone on iOS3 is like a step back in time. Unbelievable how many things have changed since then and how much better the phone/OS has gotten.
iOS isn't likely to get more open or customisable. Looking at OS X it's actually going in the opposite direction.
It's pretty evident that Apple have a clear cut target audience, which is the vast majority consisting of average users.

I don't think they are, tbh. There's still a lot of new adopters. Amongst family members I still see and increase in iPhone users. This is people who don't care about the latest spec. They'll keep their phone until it breaks and then buy a new phone as similar to the one they had before as possible.

I regret getting an iphone 5. I had a Blackberry 9780 for 3 years before getting this and I miss not having to charge it every night or it being flat just after tea time

Not had much luck with that have you Alex.
I'm the owner of a white one now, decided against black this time, the scratches would annoy me no end.

I've asked apple to send me a replacement, so will see what happens. Mine is scratched to hell, glass by camera has a mark and other side has a chip out of it. I've only dropped the phone once from memory, and that was how the chip happened, no idea how its got so scratched, its ridiculous.
