It's all well and good saying you could do it for free, but you wouldn't get the stamp in the book which a lot of people seem to get arsey about.

Only reason I take mine to a specialist Is for that stamp.
Not too expensive though. Think it will be less than £100 for an oil service

60-80 quid labour?!
Jesus. That is Essex tax!
Most people round here charge about £40 a hour.
The oil that goes in these is very expensive though. If it's the proper BMW low ash long life stuff it's like 7 or 8 quid a ltr.

60 quid for oil is mega money. I can understand the stamp and labour. But even rip off Halfords wouldn't be 60 quid for premium oil.

Best stuff to use in bmw engines is the Motul ll04 it's a little thicker than the castrol edge, which is like piss, and lasts longer.

^ bollocks. You need 5.5 or 6.5l of oil for starters iirc. Last oil change in mine cost me £75 for 2x 5L Castrol Edge with 30% off from ECP.

Labour costs at my 2 local indys are £65 p/h too. Southern twx fml!

Not surprised. You bought 10l of oil nearly twice what you need. My figures were based on only buying close to what you need ie a 4 or 5l bottle plus 1l

Here 5l of the stuff that's recommended over the castrol edge for 40 overpriced at 1320, just need a litre bottle to go with.

http://www.1320.co.uk/specific-ll-04-5w40-engine-oil

As I say it runs better than the castrol edge as slightly thicker and reduces the need to top up so regular. Also runs a tad quieter too.

6 litres won't fill the car up though, so you'd need 2 litre bottles. Thats also 5w40 and mine needs 5w30.

For tbe sake of a tenner or so, is it really worth worrying about?

It doesnt NEED 5w30 40 is slightly thicker so it wont go through it as quick. Seriously that castrol edge stuff is like water, completely normal to go through a litre per 1000 miles according to bmw, havent had to had a drop with the Motul stuff in

If you do it by BMW booked standard you need the 5w30 fully synthetic. Low ash. Long life. Rip off stuff

I agree it's not needed but any BMW specialist. Or BMW garage or anyone that services bmw's in a garage will put it in. Plus any BMW car on warrantee or with any parts on warentee. Has to have that oil in it or they won't cover it. Simple as that. And it's silly priced too.
So if it's £7 a ltr plus vat.
And the engine takes 6.5l
There's like £55
Plus 10-15 for a oil filter. Plus your hours labour at Essex price.

I'll stick with 5w30 for now. You can't mix in 5w40 on top up's anyway, can you?

Car runs fine on whatever he put in. Used to run a bit shitty on cold start up when I first got it, but since it's first service by this company, it's been fine.

The oil he used is Mobil 1 ESP, which is £49.98 for 5L on opieoils (vat Inc).

I use castrol magentec 5w30 LL01 spec oil for top up's, just because it was cheap.

May need to upgrade as it does use a lot of oil, like Steve said. Probably about 500ml's per 1000 miles, so well within bmws recommended useage.

My old shed uses no oil whatsoever. Castrol edge, 10l cost me something stupid like £35 on an offer day they did.

But £60 p/h is going rate, people love a stamp in the book

It's not thicker, it can't be if it's the same grade.

It's not the same grade though is it. It's 40 as opposed to 30. Meaning it will have higher viscosity at higher temps

Not it's not the spec of the oil is fine. It meets all bmw criteria but is just thicker at higher temp. If you lived in a cold environment you'd use different oil again

Is thicker oil better for higher mileage engines? Think I read somewhere it was. If so, might be worth me getting the 5w40 as mines approaching 90,000.

I've never heard that before. But I have heard that new engines use thinner oil as the tolerances are less so needs to be thinner oil to get around properly.
How true that is I'm not sure
Just stick with the 5w30. It's what BMW tell you to use. So why not use it.
