Apparently it could be felt in London yet I live between London and the Midlands and was up at the time and I never felt anything

Tiptronic? That's a gearbox mate, you mean tectonic. And everywhere is on tectonic plates, usually most activity is around the fault lines between them though.

Probably the magnetic poles being on the move that's causing it.

But you only get them on VAG plates at the moment.
