Why not lower? Would lighten them up on the lower ISO, reducing noise.

lens was most likely at maximum zoom and 5.6 was as low as it would go.

No reason it should be at max zoom? I really want the sigma 70-200 f2.8 for this reason.

It was at highest zoom and couldn't lower it anymroe. lens is only 4.3 anyway 

Cleaned the car today and got that

? Lower aperture=lower DOF, The aperture will be more flexible and so more capable of going lower, the less it is zoomed in.

Yes focal length effects DOF, but the larger aperture available at shorted distance will effect the dof to a great degree.

That first pic is taken on the Trent/Mersey Canal heading towards Stenson Lock in Derbyshire.
