AA man had to come out to VeeTwo tonight Couldnt get her to start recently, couldnt figure out why.

Turns out i had flooded her and my attempts to restart her were correct, i was just getting scared and giving up after a short time where as he just carried on

Besides that, he loved the VW wheels and my car overall Was quite excited about my plans regarding an inlet and what not
Was talking to him about a couple of issues and he seems to think it might not be my stem valve guides (or what ever order it goes in) that are going, he thinks it may be my coolant temperature sensor causing her to over fuel......which sounds more like the symptoms im suffering

Anyways, VeeTwo is all fixed again thanks to the AA

Anyone know where the CTS is Difficult to replace?

Well, its been 4 months since anything was posted at all!!

But tbf nothing has happened to the car in that time. Its just been driven, not even washed

But then again, ive been squirrelling things away

Anyways, where to start. I guess with the bestest bit
Trip down to see Tom lead to me now being the owner of one Lexmaul inlet

Id been thinking about my engine bay and although it looks neat in red, i wanted it black. So set to...

Blew the dust and crap off with air line, then cleaned it out with carb cleaner. Came up not too bad inside

Painted up in matt black VHT paint - i like

Then wet and dry sanded the lettering back

And the little bits just to tidy it up

Inlet and strut brace together - liking it a lot

Thats that all ready and finished now, so i added it to the ever increasing pile of 'stuff'

Stuff being -
Lexmaul inlet
Lexmaul strut brace
Carbon engine cover
Orange coolant
Oil
2 x top mounts
2 x rear wheel bearings
Oil filter
Fuel filter
Pollen filter
Aero wiper blades
Stack oil pressure gauge
Stack oil temp gauge
2 gauge pillar pod
Wire for gauges
Heat shrink for wiring
Mocal sandwich plate + adaptors
Magnetic sump plug
4 x GM spark plugs

And i forgot to add to my picture the BMC air filter and my new EGR and ICV

Just need one thing and that is the upper inlet gasket. Seems to be hard to find my local motorfactors couldnt even find one listed Going to try Vaux on Monday.

So, all that is going to be fitted, so cars off the road.
Which means i get a new car

Back to a 1.2 16v for me.

Thats all for now.
Updates no doubt thick and fast soon

Marc

Little update.
Not much done because working full days over bank holiday at work

Got upper inlet gasket from Vaux - £5.13 wasnt too bad tbf

Sprayed pillar pod one sunny morning, was black before and can hardly tell the difference but its just so i know its the same colour as everything else

Wiring for gauges made up

In and LED side of things working

Tried to get the rad hoses off, bloody mission or what that turned out to be In the end, used a jubilee clip Worked a treat

Some sexy water

Soon ran clear though

Battery tray and SAI pmup bracket looked a bit poo, so sorted them out too

Header tank out, needs a clean

Inlet off

Pretty sure this is why its still smoking, so figured id attempt the stem valve seals myself
So bought this

And figured id do the cam belt and what not whilst i was there
So also bought this

but because she will hopefully be running sweet as a nut afterwards and ill have done it all myself

All for now.

Just a few things mate, Stem seals wont cause the the TB to fill up with oil shit, That is due to the breather, My tigra is/was exactly the same and the engine is perfectly fine.

Is it chucking out blue exhaust smoke?
Stem seals will need a special tool too

One final thing haha, Why not remove the bracket for the SAI? Presuming you've removed it, which is worth while anyway.

Looks good anyway

Oh right, what can be done to the breather to stop this?

It puff's a little smoke on start up, so put it down to stem valve seals.
The sai will be going back in. Removed it to get at the rad clips
Thanks.

Great work mate.

I used that VHT paint on my 4-2-1 manifold before it was fitted and when i picked it up from the garage it had just flaked straight off

Presuming you've never cleaned the TB before, that is standard muck tbh, You could put the breather into a bottle, but it causes no harm as it is now.

The white smoke is condensation in the exhaust most likly, Nothing to worry about. Valve stem seals would cause Blue smoke. White smoke is Water/over fueling, Which is nothing to worry about with yours if its only on start up.

With the SAI, Why not just remove it? As long as you disconnect the small vaccum pipe from the valve on top of the exhaust manifold it wouldnt cause any problem. My tigra runs like this as its much easier to work on in the engine bay.

Good work anyway bud, Not trying to put a downer on you, Just helping ya out

Thanks

Appreciate the help
Ill just give the TB a clean out and leave it be then.
Stem valve seals will be done anyways because the car is nearing 74k so figured it would be good timing for a full service anyway especially as ive been doing mostly short journeys for a while now.

Cambelt and pulleys stripped off. Coil pack off.
Now down to trying to remove the bits front and back of the head to allow its removal.
Getting there slowly but surely

Rounded off one bolt but got it out eventually

Decided on a little added extra too. Sending my camshaft cover off to be powder coated, got a quote of £20 off guys who did my strut brace.

Update.

Got the head to move eventually after struggling for best part of a day trying to undo the manifold bolts. Bloody AC pipes get in the way all the time

Left the header tank frothing away over night in a bucket with false teeth tablets Worked a treat though

So, car now looks like this -

Bearing in mind i dont know what im looking at someone told me the pistons shouldnt be able to move - although they only move VERY slightly, its not like they are loose and easy to move.
There is a slight gap around the piston so you can see a bit of the ring. But there is no lip and no visible scoring to the parts the pistons are in.

Should the pistons move?
Going on what ive been told im thinking im needing big end bearings and piston rings Fuck knows though All this to save money and its costing me a fortune But experience is priceless and ive learnt to never do it again

if the bottom end wasnt knocking, then its fine.

They will move up and down as thats what they do! Around in there bores they might move a slight bit, but its nothing to worry about. Itf its not broke dont fix it etc.

If it wasnt puffing out blue smoke before, the piston rings are fine.

As soon as you said you were going ahead with the engine work dispite it not being needed i knew you would never do it again

Clean up the piston tops before you refit the head. Just give them a wipe with a rag and get any shit out of the cylinders. Also make sure you do a good job of removing the remains of the gasket using a scrapper and maybe some very fine wet and dry emery paper.

Couple people been to look at my car, said pistons are fine although whilst im this far i should consider replacing the piston rings and the big end bearings.
So thats what i plan on doing......Er.....hopefully!!!

Just ordered my rings, bearings and sump gasket for less that £100 so that was a bargain given the prices id been given locally!!

Nothing much else to update as been working over time to find money to fund this pit of a car Getting there though

Marc

Gf did a bit of painting for me also

Stripped a bit more of my camshaft out

Although found some marks i was a bit worried about

But couldnt see any damage to the cam shafts

All those marks in the head are standard, there the wrong shape to be the cam lobes for a start!

I hope you've kept the cam caps in the right order and right places.

Good progress anyhow, its all a lot of work for things that wasn't needed though.

Oh right, they just didnt look too normal thats all.
Im taking one cam out at a time, labelled each cap up and got plenty of pictures Hopefully i wont forget.

Meh, its all a learning curve. Plus, if they are renewed now then when im using the car to commute every day for the next year fingers crossed it should be an event-free year!

Thanks, Marc.
