I need tomer get a homer style Mr Plow jacket
hehe...
Popped out to B&Q this morning and ended up as a recovery service...
Our local postie was stuck (on a down hill slope :S) pushed him out - Corsa C
Towed an X5 out of ruts at the kerbside..... Thought they were meant to be better in the snow than Rangies Could have been the driver/tyres etc
Towed a rwd Lexus out of ruts at the kerbside..... that wasnt going anywhere without a tow!
gave some tips to a neighbour that looked like she was trying to burn her way through the snow and up the hill (out of snow ruts at side). Suggested she looked at the clear space behind her and reverse out on to the clearish road. She looked a tad embarrased afterwards

Cocking hill had a bus fall back down and a car refuse to come down it lol. They shut it off in the end, that place always gets the brunt of it as it doesnt make it over goodwood to get us

I've been defeated
I was out and about before and spotted an icy hill that I just had to try my luck against. It was completely covered in compacted snow, the few cars that where parked on there were all facing downhill so I just had to give it a try or 3.
There was no chance of a run up so it was a battle fought with clutch control and gear selection. It was basically 1 road that has a give way half way up but after the give way it goes steeper. To give an indication of what I was up against, a Transit got stuck on the way up to the give way and even with me trying to push it, it wouldn't go any further so he turned around and went the long way round. So after a few attempts , including trying reversing up to try the theory of rwd in reverse = fwd I was forced to give up. I managed to get about 30 yards passed the give way before failing but even after a lot of persistence it just wouldn't go any further. I was that impressed with the hills defeat, I took the long way round and got a photo, unfortunately it's a really shit photo but it gives you an impression. I managed to get alongside the car on the right hand side and at that point I was probably at a similar height to the buildings that can be seen at the bottom end of the road just to give you an impression of how steep it is. Looking back a pic from the bottom would've shown it better but you get the idea

RWD in reverse = FWD
Its FWD you try in reverse to get more grip
which i suppose simulates a 911 with engine over the driven wheels and 'pushing'

It's accepted that 'pushing' is worse is it not?
Can't see how you'd get more grip reversing in a fwd, still the same weight, just got more gears to try and pull away in going forward.

try it.... it has worked in the past for me
RWD is known to be 'better' .... but in snow there tends to be no weight on the wheels to help give traction.
Reversing a FWD up an snowy hill gives better traction... pushing rather than pulling.
I'll go google it but it worked on my old corsa B.
We had a mega steep hill out side out house that I couldnt get up going forwards

quote: •Reversing Uphill: If you are really keen, front wheel drive cars will sometimes climb a snowy slope better in reverse gear, because having the back of the car higher than the front puts more of the engine weight over the driven wheels.
•This unlikely approach does also mean that if you fail to climb the slope, and run out of traction, you are at least facing the right way to control your descent back to the bottom of the hill.
•This avoids the problem that if you fail to climb up a steep snowy slope in the normal forwards direction, you can find yourself sliding down hill backwards.
•The reduced visibility when reversing, means that this method should only be tried if you are sure about the intentions of other traffic.

Fair enough, I'd have to get stuck first to bother trying though.

AK the push vs. pull thing was something I read on here a while back, wasn't really sure on the theory myself but thought it was worth trying it out, wasn't as successful tho

Hope his fucking clutch burns out on the way to work!
