I can see a nascar style full course yellow/safety car style being enforced now as this is the only real way to ensure this doesn't happen again.
Hope this is a piss take:

All the drivers should/would have been notified about the tractor on track and should have acted accordingly. They also have a responsibility for safety not just the marshalls.
For me the speed of the accident indicates a failure of some sort.
And the car is going straight off, no angle what so ever, you would at least expect that it would be someways sideways if he was trying to make the turn?

Canopies and full roll hoops were tested quiet seriously by the FIA a couple of winters ago, after the death of Surtees' son when a wheel hit him in the head.
I can't help thinking that open-cockpit is on a low life expectancy now, but there are other safety considerations such as getting out of a burning car quick enough.
I bet a canopy would be an Adrian Newey wet dream though.

Hopefully the Schumacher news is true. Would be great to see him walking around the paddock again.

Can only be a positive. Ok he won't drive F1 cars again but if he could hold a decent conversation and have good memory recovery it would be great news.

Just googled the injury. Not good news by the sound of it depends on the severity of course.

So i looked up Diffuse Anxonal Injury and according to Wiki
quote: Diffuse axonal injury (DAI) is one of the most common and devastating types of traumatic brain injury,[1] meaning that damage occurs over a more widespread area than in focal brain injury. DAI, which refers to extensive lesions in white matter tracts, is one of the major causes of unconsciousness and persistent vegetative state after head trauma.[2] It occurs in about half of all cases of severe head trauma.
The outcome is frequently coma, with over 90% of patients with severe DAI never regaining consciousness.[2] Those who do wake up often remain significantly impaired.[3]
Other authors state that DAI can occur in every degree of severity from (very) mild or moderate to (very) severe.[4][5] Concussion may be a milder type of diffuse axonal injury

Just doesn't happen in F1 any more. So sad, talk about a combination of coincidences and some seriously shitty luck.
I hope he can prove the exception to the rule and be racing for Ferrari soon.

Could there be a worse time for consecutive grand prixs? I cant even think about Russia with all this happening. How the hell are the Marussia lads meant to get on with the weekend?

I would totally understand if they didnt, but its also their "home" GP so im wondering if that will mean pressure to attend, even if they only field 1 car.

Its hard for them not to appear because they have to keep ahead of the other teams for prize money at the end of the year and to make sure they can survive for next seaon?

Terrible news.
I think Marussia should make the race at Sochi, but I'd fully understand if they didn't. It would be a great show of strength and it would be what Jules would want, no-way would he want to be throwing points away to Caterham.
Is the "Ferrari driver of the future" a bit of a curse? Kubica then Bianchi, two undoubtable F1 talents that were taken prematurely.

I notice the cause of DAI is usually rapid acceleration/deceleration, so in this case he might have not actually smashed his head on the tractor but it was more the fact he hit such a solid object that slowed him down so quickly, which would suggest something like a closed cockpit wouldnt have helped in this case.

hans device is there to stop the head over extending from the spine which of course is the largest risk. However, as with a lot of card accidents the energy involved in deceleration is the biggest danger. you can stop the body from decelerating however all the mushy stuff inside is free to hit the inside at considerable speed. In this case his brain

Looks like it's been designed on an etch-a-sketch.
Also, top speed 340kph? On a street circuit? Are they crazy?
